The new Ohio law went into effect in April, but the state gave drivers a six-month grace period to adjust to the new law.WSYX joined the Whitehall Police Department as they were on patrol, looking for drivers violating the law.Lt. Brian Smith said since April, he has not seen driver's habits change. In the last five years, it seems like this problem has gotten significantly worse."I think it’s only getting worse," Smith said. "And it will only get worse as we stay connected with our phones. I hope that just like any other dangerous driving, like drunk driving, for example, I hope the message gets out there that police are issuing citations."WSYX asked Smith about the signs he sees on the road that a driver may be on their phone."The driving behavior of someone on their phone is just like you would see with a drunk driver," Smith said. "People going well under the speed limit, all over the road. You will see a lot of times, people will have their heads down. Some people will be holding their phone on their steering wheel."Smith said to pull a driver over, he wants to see them physically holding up their phones."That's the only evidence we need to give someone a citation and send them to court," Smith said. "We consider this to be a pretty serious crime. Anytime someone has their eyes off the road, it really puts people’s safety in jeopardy."WSYX was on patrol with Smith near the intersection of North Hamilton Rd. and East Broad St. Smith said that intersection is known for having a high number of accidents, which could be due to distracted driving."I could sit here and watch this all day long, and it would be violation after violation," Smith said. "At least one out of every ten drivers."Under the new law, Ohio drivers are not allowed to dial a phone number, send a text message, browse social media, facetime, stream or watch videos, or play games.Those who break the law will receive a ticket and points on their license.Loading ...
