"It goes back to, do we have enough resources to help everybody?"So far this year, Columbus police tell us that officers have responded to 21 homicides linked to domestic violence, compared to just seven for the entire year of 2022.York says the spike in domestic violence homicides may be due to a huge demand for shelter space.One in three people are being turned away from shelters and programs. The demand is there, we don't have enough resources to help."We have two areas that have a lot of service," said Columbus Police Assistant Chief, Greg Bodker. "One was the far south end, and one was the Hilltop." CPD tells ABC 6 they've dedicated a unit to domestic violence, and have created a pilot program with Nationwide Children's Hospital, where officers can request assistance from advocates at the crime scene.They can contact the advocates, the advocates respond in real time," said Bodker. "While the officers are there, they offer to get help for the victims of domestic violence.CPD also has created a team that is now concentrating on cases involving strangulation.The division also are reaching out to cities that are a similar size to Columbus to see if they are experiencing a similar spike."Are there any unique programs that they have started?" said Bodker.Advocates hope these potentially life-changing programs will help domestic violence victims turn their lives around.We do not want another statistic in the state," said York.
