Scott Applewhite)Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan is working hard to become the next Speaker of the House.On Fox News Thursday morning, Jordan said not only can he pull together House Republicans, but also the GOP nationwide.You need someone who can unite the conference, and I think just as importantly untie the conservative and Republican movement across this country. That’s what I think I can do.Media reports indicate staff members of ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy are making call to build support for Jordan.NBC News reports that Jordan says he has a "great conversation" with Donald Trump, who has floated the idea of coming to the Capitol next week.He has also garnered backing from GOP leaders in Ohio, including Sen. JD Vance and Congressman Mike Carey.In a message on X, Carey called Jordan "a proven conservative fighter who can continue delivering on our commitment to America."But can someone who made his reputation as a "fighter" conduct work across-the-aisle?Kyle Kondik, an Ohio native now with the University of Virginia's Center on Politics says compromise will be a necessity for the nest Speaker if Congress is to function.You have to compromise on those sorts of things. Because Republicans don't control the Senate, they don't control the presidency. They only have a small, small majority in the House.The last Speaker of the House from Ohio was John Boehner, a Cincinnati republican who served from 2011-2015. Ironically, Boehner later was critical of Jordan, citing him and other members of the Freedom Caucus that Jordan founded as a key reason for his resignation as Speaker.In April 2021, John Dickerson from CBS pointed to a section about Jordan in Boehner's recently released book.Dickinson: "You call some of these members ‘political terrorists.’Boehner: "Oh yeah, Jim Jordan especially, my colleague from Ohio. I just never saw a guy who spent more time tearing things apart never building anything, never putting anything together."I think it shows like where the Republican Party is going now," said Kondik. "Because, again, Jordan was sort of one of the insurgents back then and like now he might be the next speaker within the course of 10 years."We asked Ohio Democratic Chair Liz Walters how well she thinks that Jim Jordan could work with Democrats.He is one of the most extreme GOP members in the legislature, in the US House," Walters said.
