SubscribeE-paperMuscat – The seventh meeting of the undersecretaries of the ministries of tourism in GCC states began at Oman Across Ages Museum in Dakhliyah on Wednesday.Toping the agenda were discussions on the Gulf Tourism Strategy, the prospect of a unified Gulf tourist visa and development of a Gulf tourism platform.Dr Ali Foulad, advisor to Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, said, “A unified Gulf tourist visa will enhance tourism cohesion among Gulf Council countries, drawing tourists from across the globe.”In his address, H E Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidi, Oman’s Undersecretary for Tourism, emphasised the meeting’s importance in harnessing the opportunities in the GCC countries. He recapped the outcomes of the sixth meeting in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia in 2022. “Gulf cooperation showcases the natural and cultural abundance of our tourist destinations,” he noted, urging joint programmes and events to elevate the region’s tourism sector.H E Busaidi stressed the need for actionable plans to realise the shared vision of the Arabian Gulf as a globally competitive tourist destination. He pointed to the sector’s potential in offering vast employment opportunities and boosting economic growth. “Tourist establishments, and cultural, natural and heritage sites should be enhanced to offer promising tourism experiences.”He also shared Oman’s hope for the wilayat of Sur to be nominated Capital of Arab Tourism for 2024. Known for its rich history and diverse tourist attractions, Sur holds significance in the broader Gulf Tourism Strategy.Khalid bin Ali al Sunaidi, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Development Affairs in the GCC Secretariat General, informed about a notable growth in the travel and tourism sector – a 57.5% increase in its contribution to the GCC’s GDP in 2022 compared to 2021.Based on various performance metrics in tourism, GCC countries stand at the pinnacle, outpacing 117 nations globally, he added.Sunaidi referenced the Gulf Tourism Strategy (2023-2030) approved in the 43rd session of the GCC Supreme Council, showcasing the region’s ambitious goals.The Tourism Statistics Platform recorded 224 tourism events and identified over 837 tourist sites across GCC countries this year, Sunaidi informed.Continue ReadingContinue ReadingContinue Reading© 2021 Apex Press and Publishing.
