Phil Foden had opened the scoring midway through the first half before the hosts responded against the run of play through Lois Openda shortly after the break. While City had dominated much of the game it had looked as though they may struggle to find a winner before Julian Alvarez finally settled nerves with a fine strike six minutes from at the Red Bull Arena before fellow substitute Jeremy Doku wrapped up the win in stoppage time. Here are your Thursday evening City headlines. Rico Lewis wants to play further forward in midfield - but is willing to remain patient for his chances in the middle. Lewis was the standout player in Manchester City's win at RB Leipzig, setting up Phil Foden's opener and almost scoring himself in a brilliant first half. Afterwards, Pep Guardiola called him one of the best young players he has trained, and Foden insisted he will only get better under the manager. Having broken into the City side as a right-back, Lewis helped City transition to the system of inverted defenders that helped them win the treble, and he is now enjoying more game-time as a number eight in midfield. John Stones has been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this month’s internationals despite not playing for nearly two months. The defender was back in training this week and was named on the bench in City’s 3-1 Champions League win over RB Leipzig on Tuesday. However, he has not featured in action since the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal back on August 6. A hip injury has prevented Stones from playing any of City’s subsequent games this season but Southgate has called him up for the forthcoming friendly with Australia and the Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy, both of which are on home soil.
