It seemed pretty intimidating and I didn’t really know where to start. I got the opportunity to try this clay DIY starter kit and I’m pretty much hooked.The kit comes with everything you need to get started with polymer clay jewelry. There are templates, tools to cut the clay, a clay roller, 4 neutral Sculpey Premo colors and an instruction booklet with loads of project tutorials and techniques (step by step with pictures, so any newbie can do it).For my first project, I decided to try a clay initial charm necklace. I used 3 of the Sculpey Premo colors included in the kit to create some varied colors and shapes for my monogram charms.Sculpey Premo was so easy to work with. Once you knead it well, it’s soft enough to blend well and roll out, but also firm enough to hold fine details. Using the circle and small arch shapes from the jewelry shape template, I cut out grey granite, white and tan charms.I added some dimension to the charms by pressing them in random spots with a wooden clay tool, creating subtle indentations. I used a small stamp for the letters, pierced the holes and baked them.Next I painted a wash of metallic paint to the white and tan charms, and a coat of glossy sealer on the grey charm. I didn’t paint the initials, though. Having the texture variation makes the letters pop more. Adding jump rings to each charm and stringing them onto a necklace wrapped it up. So easy!I’m in love with how it turned out! I wore it for the first time yesterday and 2 people asked where I bought it. 😉 These clay necklaces would make a great gift idea for a mom, too. Make a letter charm for each of her kids. It would be a great wedding shower gift as well… add the soon-to-be newlyweds initials to a charm and you have her “something new!”Since making the clay jewelry was so easy, I decided to try to replicate a pair of earrings that I had that I loved and lost. It was so easy to do with the Sculpey starter kit.The dearly departed earrings were a 3 disc teardrop style. I used the circle template to cut my 3 circles. This time I used the piece I snapped out of the template so I could make a larger circle shape. Like I did with the charm necklace, I added some dimension to them by pressing in random spots with a wooden clay tool. Then I pierced the holes and baked.Next, I connected them with an ear pin and jump rings. I attached them to a clasp, added another pin behind the earring and added some soft gold metallic brush strokes.I like them even better than the originals!Are you ready to try making your own polymer clay jewelry? When you pick up the starter kit, you’ll find tutorials for so many clay jewelry making techniques like marbling, Mokume Gane, Terrazzo, DIY beads, Bulls Eye Cane, Mirror image and more. There are loads of projects ideas like hexagon earrings, Terrazzo earrings, marbled earrings, a bead bracelet, a Mokume Gane necklace, a Bull’s-Eye Cane necklace, a mirror image bracelet and a marbled ring cone.When you pop the plastic pieces out of the template, don’t throw them away! You can use them as templates themselves (they will make slightly bigger cut outs) and it’s also a great way to position the different pieces together to envision what your project will look like.I’m so excited to make more! The supplies in this kit are not only perfect for jewelry making, they’re great tools to have for any polymer clay crafting you decide to try next.
