I have seen many homes damaged and people injured by fires that could easily have been prevented,” said Cpt. Bob Perry, fire prevention officer.To celebrate the week, information packages will be sent to elementary students with details on how to enter the “Fire Chief for a Day” contest.Kids in Kindergarten to Grade 3 can enter for a chance to win a private visit to the City fire hall, a fire chief hat, and a ride to school in a fire truck.Schools will also hold a fire drill as part of Fire Prevention Week, and those that do will be entered into a draw for a $200 gift certificate from the Downtown Langley Business Association.Firefighters will be participating in grocery bagging events at three grocery stores:Members of the Langley City fire department will pack customers’ groceries while sharing cooking fire safety tips and information.“It’s important to understand and appreciate how things get hot fairly quickly, how to use an extinguisher, how to put lids on things that do flare up,” said deputy chief Dean Colthorp with Langley City fire rescue.Ahead of FPW, City Fire Rescue Service offered some tips to stay safe while cooking:City fire is also hosting a “fire prevention poster” contest which is open to Kindergarten and Grade 12 students. Schools around B.C. are participating.Students must enter one poster hand-drawn or created with digital media that brings attention to fire prevention activities with a focus on the theme “cooking safety.”Details to enter the contest are available online at gov.bc.ca.Fire Prevention Week is observed internationally each year during the week of Oct. 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on Oct. 8, 1871.
