34568c8bae0bc3439f9c06a73eea0ec3bbce854bab60ebfa8e30d47c71d2cfcc6829c17a90be664cby Gold Meadows and KCBY.com StaffWed, October 4th 2023, 9:22 PM UTC3VIEW ALL PHOTOS(Gold Meadows/SBG)More than 70 banned books are available at the library on Southwestern Oregon Community College's campus.On Wednesday, students and staff there spoke out against banning books during the college's "Let Freedom Read" Banned Books Open Mic.Held as part of the American Library Association's annual Banned Books Week, attendees shared from their favorite banned books and spoke on what banning books means to them.According to the ALA, there were 2,571 different books challenged in libraries across the U.S., compared to 223 in 2020."Partnering with our college's IDEA committee; that stands for inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, and we're really happy to present this IDEA today because in many cases, books [that] are banned or challenged are by or about people from the LGBT community or folks who identify as black, indigenous, or people of color," said Noelle Ebert, a librarian at SWOCC.On Wednesday, Ebert read from "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky, which includes gay characters and some violence."These books are being targeted. And librarians, and journalists, and lots of people in the intellectual freedom community are here to take a stand against that. There's been a lot of politicalization around some of these themes, but students and everybody in this country have a right to free speech and in conjunction, a right to read whatever they want," she said.Ebert says challenged books may result in restricted access to a title, while banned books are removed completely from a collection.Banned Books Week has been running for over 40 years.Loading ...
