Hey guys! Today I am going to be sharing the ultimate easy curly girl method guide for beginners! So let’s dive right in!As an Amazon Associate earn from qualifying purchases. We want to do this because in order to start the curly girl method we need to start with a completely clean slate.So, we are going to do a nice deep cleanse to wash away all of the yucky ingredients and buildup that may be gunking up your hair so that we can make way for the ingredients that are going to fill your hair up with all of the nutrients that it needs to thrive and form beautiful, healthy curls!To clarify, we are going to use a sulfate shampoo. *gasp* I can already hear you asking now, “But Tay, aren’t we supposed to avoid sulfates like the plague with the curly girl method?”And my answer would be yes, *BUT* a sulfate shampoo is just what your hair needs to create that clean slate that we just talked about. This wash with a sulfate shampoo is called the final wash. After this wash, we will only be using gentle shampoos that won’t strip your hair.My very favorite shampoo for a final wash is the Suave Daily Clarify Shampoo. It is insanely affordable, which is just what you need for a shampoo that you will only be using once (or maybe a few other times in the future if you accidentally use a product containing silicones)Linked HERE at TargetAfter we have done our final wash, it is super important to deep condition. Both of which will be silicone and sulfate-free.There really isn’t a hard and fast rule on how often you should wash your hair because everyone’s hair is different. Many curlies with a drier scalp only need to wash once a week, while other curlies with oily scalps (like me) need to wash 2-3 times a week.My recommendation is simply to listen to your hair and wash it when it feels greasy or gunky. Healthy hair starts at the root, so taking care of your scalp and keeping it clean is essential.My very favorite shampoo and conditioner are from the brand Giovanni. Both are very affordable and are great options for new wavies and curlies.Available HERE on AmazonNaturally wavy and curly hair is tangly. It just is.So, it is essential to make sure that we are detangling and detangling in a way that is gentle on our curls. NOW, the strict curly girl method says that you are only allowed to detangle with your fingers and cannot use a hairbrush.Here are my thoughts on that… those with a lot of hair or a curlier texture are going to find that finger detangling either takes forever or pulls and is painful… it’s just not practical for everyone. Styling products! Here is my formula for choosing styling products:When it comes to recommending products for curly newbies, I will recommend that you start out with 2 products to keep it as simple as possible. I will also recommend that you start out with very affordable products.These are my recommendations for a few reasons… First, when you are just starting out, you will have no idea what ingredients your hair likes yet, so you may have to do a little (or a lot) of trial and error. When you keep it simple with only styling with 2 products, it will make it a lot easier to start learning about your hair.Second, there is nothing worse than spending a bunch of money on a hair product only to find out that your hair doesn’t like it! This is bound to make you feel discouraged and lead you down the path of wanting to quit your curly hair journey altogether!The good news is that there are SO many amazing affordable curly hair products out there now and I HIGHLY recommend that those are where you start. Here is my breakdown of a few of the basic techniques and what they are going to do for your curls!Raking is going to do a few things… It will help evenly distribute your product, help with curl definition, and create smaller, separated curls.This one is going to create big, juicy curl clumps. It also helps smooth down frizz.This is going to help your curls spring upThis is all personal preference. At the beginning of my curly hair journey (and even now 5 years later), I find that it is a lot quicker and easier to style upside down while still in the shower plus it creates A TON of volume, which is my very favorite part. Some people prefer upright styling because they have more control over each individual curl. I personally find that upright styling takes way more time and takes a lot more skill.Linked here is my own beginner curly hair routine which I followed for the longest time at the beginning of my curly hair journey and still love today! I have also linked the blog post version below!Regular terrycloth towels are terrible for your hair, so instead, you are going to want to use a microfiber towel, an old t-shirt, or a t-shirt towel. My personal preference is an old t-shirt or t-shirt towel.My routine is to first plop my hair in my t-shirt for about 15 minutes while I get dressed and do my makeup for the day. Plopping is a great way to absorb the extra water out of your hair without causing frizz while also giving your curls a chance to form on their own. After I have plopped I will take out the towel and scrunch any leftover excess water out of my hair.Below I have my plopping tutorial linked.This is all personal preference. I personally air dry my hair most of the time because I am the mom of a very busy 1-year-old, so staying stationary while diffusing my hair isn’t really ideal for my daily life. Air drying is just a lot easier for me in my crazy day-to-day mom life. Other curlies find it easier to diffuse because their hair is completely dry a lot faster. Diffusing also tends to create more volume and tighter curls.Below I have my diffusing tutorial linked!One of the most frequently asked questions I get is about how to avoid crunchy curls. My answer is… you don’t! If your hair is hard and crunchy when it is completely dry, that is ideal! Products that create hold in your curls will form a protective cast around each curl as it dries, which will give your curls definition, less frizz, and more shine. Once your hair is completely dry, you can gently scrunch your curls and shake them out to release the gel cast to reveal your beautiful, defined curls!The key to getting your curls to last for days a time is protecting them at night. The good news is that there are a ton of different easy ways to sleep on your curls based on your hair length and what is the most comfortable for you! The even better news is that I have an entire blog post and youtube video talking all about them!Your curls are bound to get a little wonky between washes. You don’t need to wash and restyle to get them looking great again! With a little curl refresh, your curls will be looking great again in no time! The key is to know how to refresh them based on what they actually need. Some days they will just need a little moisture, while others they may need all of the things.
