The event included scheduled speakers, as well as indoor and outdoor vendors.MOST COVETED – A large wooden Bigfoot carving was the prime raffle item at the Bigfoot Bash in Oscoda this past Saturday.BIGFOOT DROPPINGS – One of the vendor booths, Up North Candy Company, offered free samples of their “Bigfoot Droppings.”PHOTO OP – Bigfoot was present at his own Bash, allowing participants to take photos of and with him.OSCODA – This past weekend, the Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce (OACC) put on their inaugural Bigfoot Bash at the Shoreline Players Theater in Oscoda – an event attended by folks from all over the country who are interested in exploring the big, hairy, manlike creature’s existence.It began on Friday evening with two events: a meet and greet with the speakers, followed by a hike in the Huron-Manistee National Forest.Saturday’s full day of events featured speakers, vendors, raffles and a silent auction, most of which were Bigfoot-related.The largest item that was raffled off, was a giant wooden carving of the large hairy guy himself, which was to be drawn at 3 p.m. for an attendee to win if they were present for the drawing.With 300 people descending on the event, the parking was already overflowing by 10 a.m.Many of us have grown up listening to stories about Bigfoot aka Sasquatch telling scary tales around the campfire about a large hairy beast that came out at night looking for a child size snack.For some, the story of Bigfoot is just that – a story or myth. For others, it is a serious business. This includes research scientists, trackers, museums, books, crafts people, believers and then, of course we can’t forget, the hoaxers.Regardless of whether or not one is a believer, it is at least interesting to consider Bigfoot’s possible existence. Understanding proper scientific protocols is required for research that can stand the heat of peer review and, so far, there is still not enough data points to increase the statistical significance to the level it needs – as was explained to the audience by the first speaker, Cliff Barackman.Barackman is a Bigfoot Specialist who had come all the way from Boring, Ore. He encouraged everyone at the event to join the Bigfoot information network which funnels Bigfoot data to his museum so that it can be added to the database.The audience oohed and aahed as they listened to the history and stories Barackman shared. He was an extremely engaging speaker, surprisingly humorous and there was a high level of audience interaction that was appreciated by all.Barackman is a cryptozoologist who is considered an expert in the field of Bigfoot Research. His bio in the program states that he and his wife, Melissa, own and curate the North American Big Foot Center in Oregon, which features the largest public collection of Bigfoot evidence in the Pacific Northwest.Barackman also co-hosts a podcast called “Bigfoot and Beyond,” and has appeared on many television programs, including “Finding Bigfoot.”Other speakers included Adam Davies and Matt Moneymaker.Davies is an explorer who, according to his bio, “seeks evidence that can be tested and corroborated by people who are experts in their own fields.”Moneymaker founded the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, after reporting that he personally came face-to-face with a Bigfoot in a wildlife refuge in Portage County, Ohio. He has appeared in multiple TV series, such as “Mysterious Encounters” and “Finding Bigfoot.”The phenomenon that is Bigfoot has created a variety of groups that are an odd mix of believers, hoaxers and those who think it is simply fun mythology.
