NBC5 and Vermont Foodbank, the state's largest hunger-relief organization, are partnering for a week-long donation drive to benefit the COVID-19 Hunger Relief Fund. CLICK HERE TO DONATE The drive begins on Monday, May 4 and continues through Friday, May 8. The community will be called upon to donate through the Vermont Foodbank's website link. Addressing that, Vermont Foodbank is on track to distribute 1.6 million pounds of food in April alone — 78% above normal levels and the most it has ever distributed in a single month. To meet the increased need, Vermont Foodbank expects to spend an additional $1 million above budget on food alone between now and September. "We're seeing up to 100% more people reaching out for help," Vermont Foodbank CEO John Sayles said. "Our network is working at the upper limit of its capacity to distribute more food than ever before to meet need, all while shifting operations to reduce virus spread and working with fewer volunteer than we usually rely on to ensure social distancing."To keep the public informed on the increased need for donations, NBC5 will broadcast daily news reports during the morning newscasts (between 4:30 and 7:30 a.m.) and evening newscasts (between 5 and 6:30 p.m.). “Our focus is to help our communities through this difficult time," said WPTZ/WNNE President and General Manager Justin Antoniotti. "We can’t think of a more important need that ensuring families have enough to eat.
