INVESTIGATORS ARE STILL AT THIS SCHOOL STREET HOUSE WHERE THIS MORNING'S SHOOTING TOOK PLACE. AND POLICE SAY IT WAS THE SHOOTERS WIFE WHO CALLED 911 TO REPORT WHAT HAPPENED.  THE STATE POLICE CRIME SCENE COMMAND POST...PULLING DOWN SCHOOL STREET IN NEWPORT WERE VERMONT STATE POLICE SAY TWO PEOPLE ARE DEAD AND ANOTHER WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER A SHOOTING MONDAY MORNING.  POLICE SAY 51 YEAR OLD PAUL BROWN SHOT AND KILLED HIS SON IN LAW, 38- YEAR OLD KEVIN ATKINS, THEN SHOT AND INJURED HIS STEP DAUGHTER 29- YEAR-OLD NICOLE ATKINS, EVENTUALLY TURNING THE GUN ON HIMSELF. THE ATKINS THREE CHILDREN WERE ALSO INSIDE THE HOUSE BUT WERE NOT HURT  A NEIGHBOR WHO LIVES NEXT DOOR REMEBERED A RECENT CONVERSTATION ALLEGEDLY BETWEEN HER BOYFRIEND AND A MAN WHO LIVED AT THE HOUSE.  POLICE SAY ALL THREE PEOPLE LIVED IN THIS HOME.  AS INVESTIGATORS CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR CLUES, SOME WHO LIVE ON THIS STREET AREN'T PANICKING. Investigators said Paul Brown, 51, of Newport shot Kevin Atkins, 38 and his step daughter, Nicole Atkins, 29, then shot himself.Kevin Atkins died and Nicole Atkins suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and neck. At last check she was in stable condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.The shooting took place at a home at 74 School St. just before 6 a.m. on Monday. "Gone to get into the car, and we saw two ambulances, about four EMTs were out and a police officer had pulled up and there was already I believe two inside," Monica Vallieres, a neighbor said. According to State Police, police were notified about the shooting when Kim Brown, 48, the wife of Paul Brown, called 911. She is Nicole Atkins' mother. She was uninjured. The Atkins' three children, ages 2, 5 and 6 were inside at the time of the shooting but they were not injured."They were removed very quickly by the first arriving officers and DCF responded and helped us out quickly to get them with some family members," acting Newport Police Chief Travis Bingham said.In a release, police said Nicole and Kevin Atkins "stayed at the home on and off but listed their full-time residence as North Troy."Police do not believe there is any active threat to the community, describing the shooting as an "isolated incident."
