And music fans won’t even have to wait years for the plans to be finalized and the walls to go up because the building already exists.Providence Park will begin hosting “multiple shows a year” in the summer of 2024, the Portland Timbers announced Monday. Rock legends Foo Fighters will be the first act since 2005 to play the outdoor arena formerly known as Civic Stadium, PGE Park and Jeld-Wen Field.The band, helmed by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, is scheduled to visit Portland on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024 as part of their “Everything or Nothing At All” North American tour. Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct, 6 at 10 a.m on SeatGeek.Tickets also will be available through Vivid Seats, StubHub and Ticket Squeeze.While the Portland area is awash in outdoor summer venues, from Pioneer Courthouse Square to the Clackamas County Fairgrounds to Edgefield to RV Inn Style Resorts Amphitheater, Providence Park could bring bigger acts that may have previously skipped this market.Like many big venues across the country, this one will be working with Live Nation.Timbers spokesperson Collin Romer said Live Nation would put on full stadium shows at the venue, but the Timbers may work with independent promoters for smaller concerts.“This is very exciting for us, for our fans and for the city of Portland,” Timbers CEO Heather Davis said in a press release. “We are proud to continue our investment in the vibrancy of downtown Portland as Providence Park becomes the largest concert venue in the Portland area. Artists who had to bypass Portland on their West Coast tours will have a great new option to consider.”The stadium now known as Providence Park welcomed many musical acts to Portland in the past, starting with Elvis Presley in 1957. Bob Dylan and Tom Petty stopped by in 1986 and the next year, so did David Bowie. It even hosted Lillith Fair in 1999.The stadium held its last concert in 2005, when the Portland Beavers still played Triple A baseball there. Since then, Providence Park has undergone extensive renovations for soccer.In this iteration, a concert stage will be erected on the south end of the stadium. Both reserved seats and general admission will be available.Configured for live music events, Providence Park will be able to seat about 30,000 people, eclipsing all even remotely local outdoor venues and the Moda Center, which seats about 20,000.
