McClain Baxley/For the Savannah Morning NewsView CommentsSTATESBORO — Georgia Southern is planning to honor 2020 spring-sport seniors by covering tuition costs for 2020-21, GS athletic director Jared Benko told the Savannah Morning News on Monday, April 27.The total cost of the aid is expected to be about $140,000 and will pick up returning athletes’ tuition and the same amount of aid they would’ve gotten this academic year.“It’s the right thing to do. It’s something that we wanted to do,” Benko said. “(GS President) Dr. (Kyle) Marrero and everyone on our leadership staff was very supportive of ensuring that these seniors, these young men and women, have the chance to come back and truly have a fitting senior year.”Benko and his staff first met with head coaches of spring sports to see how many senior student-athletes would be interested in returning for spring 2021. They then narrowed down that list and sorted out the aid.Benko left it to the head coaches to tell their players.“Some people already have jobs, some people are in equivalency sports, so that means they aren't getting the full grant paid,” Benko said. “So there might be some financial decisions that would prevent them from coming back.”The $140,000 will come from fundraising and cutting costs from other areas of athletics, Benko said.“It could change really based upon (the fact that) we have a few people that are trying to decide between taking jobs or coming back to school,” Benko said. “In general, we had to find a way to tighten the belt. This was a priority for us and we were able to make it work.”The NCAA Division 1 council voted March 30 to allow schools to provide spring sport student-athletes an additional year of eligibility. For spring 2020, there were 23 seniors on GS rosters. Georgia Southern announced Friday, May 1, that the school will welcome back up to 14 seniors on scholarship in spring sports for an additional season in spring 2021.View Comments
