Thorne beat out incumbent starter Robby Ashford and redshirt freshman Holden Geriner for the job.Thorne, who logged 6,493 passing yards and 49 passing touchdowns in 29 appearances with the Spartans, joined the Tigers in May after going through spring practice at Michigan State and entering the portal April 30. He led MSU to an 11-2 record and a win over Pitt in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl in 2021."People want to follow him," Thorne's personal trainer, Kofi Hughes, told the Montgomery Advertiser in May. "Payton has always been the guy that’s like, ‘Hey, we’re going this way.
