The Polk County Schools' superintendent tells us the smell from the waste seeps into classrooms.Residents protested near Copperhill Industries, the company that they say is responsible for the dumps.Many at Wednesday's protest held signs saying 'stop the stink' and 'biosolids are human waste.'Those protestors eventually made their way up to city hall.School leaders at Copper Basin Elementary say the smell from Copperhill Industries has forced them to limit students' time outdoors.It’s been months since we first covered residents concerns about the smell near the old mine in Copperhill.The odor? It comes from the biosolids program at Copperhill Industries, intended to bring back vegetation to the stripped mining land.Business leaders and neighbors are still upset, protesting Wednesday, in part, to bring attention to how its affecting nearby students.Crystal Taylor, whose son goes to Copper Basin Elementary School, says the kids can't always go outside."Last Tuesday when I picked him up, he was so disappointed. He said 'we were going to go outside for STEM to do a project, but we didn't get to'. I said, 'Well, why not?' He said, 'Because the teacher said it was too stinky,'" says Taylor.We took these concerns to School Superintendent James Jones.He says, at times, the smell from the biosolids is so bad that "teachers have told me they have to come in because the students are complaining so much."The 2 schools nearest the biosolid site are Copper Basin High School and Copper Basin Elementary School."That just takes away from milestones learning. I mean, not only is it putting their health at risk, but now it's taken away from their academic goals. I mean, it just is not making sense," says Taylor.We keep reaching out to Copperhill Industries, but they still will not answer.According to Copperhill Industries website, the biosolids being spread right now should have a lesser odor than what the site used in year’s past.The company is trying to reassure residents they are doing everything they can to lessen the smell like adding lime, changing transportation routes, and applying far from neighboring residents.TDEC says they have not received any recent odor complaints from the site.
