That's up to 12 years in prison, and a possible fine of $5,000."The purpose of the bill is to catch these folks before they carry out an act of mass violence," Sen. Haile said.Haile wants the state to take threats seriously."We've got to have a way to identify these folks, and then have a way to process them through the judicial system and currently we really don't have that with this only being a misdemeanor," Sen. Haile added.Haile says the current misdemeanor charge would only be the case in some instances and under the discretion of law enforcement."We wanted to leave the misdemeanor in place because a lot of times you'll have a 13-14 year old that mouths off and we don't want to be looking at a felony for them, probably don't even want to charge them with a misdemeanor, but we want to leave that there for law enforcement," Haile said.The bill at the state level will be revived in January during regular session.Keep in mind, Tennessee schools are also enforcing a zero-tolerance offense for any student who makes a mass threat, resulting in a one-year suspension.Download the FREE FOX 17 News app to get push alerts sent to your iPhone, iPad or Android.Loading ...
