(Submitted photo)Brian JohnsonOctober 3, 2023After 15 months of construction, a new pavilion is about to debut on the shores of Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis.The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board on Tuesday announced an Oct. 20 opening date for the pavilion, which replaces a previous structure built in 1930 and destroyed by a fire in 2019.Anchoring the $6.5 million rebuild project are two new buildings with a restaurant and market and a combined 4,400 square feet of space. The new restaurant, Pimento on the Lake, will operate seasonally in the north building, the city said. Pimento Market will be open year-round in the south building.Dan Elias, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board project manager, said the idea behind the two buildings was to “break the mold from just having that Memorial Day to Labor Day summer usage.”The project team engaged with the community for about 12 months prior to construction and built off building assessments that predated the fire, Elias said. Emerging from that process were thoughts ranging from a desire to maintain views of the lake from surrounding trails, and recognition that the pavilion was being built on Native land.A Native-themed mural — the result of a partnership of the Native American Community Development Institute and Hennepin Theatre Trust — is planned for the pavilion. Steel columns throughout the building are adorned with Dakota language signs, including decals designed by artist Adrienne Zimiga-January, the MPRB said.In addition, visitors will also find “improved outdoor seating with 3,000 square feet of open covered space, a small performance stage, upgraded landscaping and trail safety, and a six-stall, year-round restroom area,” the MPRB said.Returning to the pavilion site are previously displayed naval artifacts: a wheel from the USS Minneapolis and a bell from USS Minnesota. Both ships served during World War I. The American Legion donated the artifacts to the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board in 1928 and 1932, respectively.For decades, the wheel and bell were on display as part of a Navy Memorial at the northeast corner of the lake.
