We have a packed lineup of new movies coming out this week, including a couple of horror films, a few comedies, a drama, and a musical.Academy Award-winner Ellen Burstyn reprises her role from one of the greatest horror films ever in The Exorcist: Believer. Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones star in the true story of a flashy lawyer taking on a big corporation in The Burial.We have a return to a Stephen King story in the prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, and Peter Dinklage is a married opera composer who has writer’s block until he cheats on his wife, with Anne Hathaway playing his wife and Marisa Tomei as the muse who refuses to let him go in She Came to Me.Below is the full list of all the new movies coming out this week in theaters and streaming!Rating: RRelease Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: The Exorcist: Believer returns to a classic horror film setting. In 1973, the devil possessed Chris MacNeil’s (Ellen Burstyn) daughter, Regan, and it took a heroic priest to save her. Now, in present day, two girls (Lidya Jewett and Olivia Marcum) disappear into the woods and then return three days later with no memory of what went on. Something has happened to the girls. And there is an evil presence that only one person alive has witnessed anything like this before: Chris MacNeil.What to Watch For: Ellen Burstyn, who was nominated for her role in the 1973 film The Exorcist, agreed to reprise the role after they met her salary demands (doubling what they initially offered). Jeremiah turns to the only lawyer with the guts to take the big guys on, the one and only Willie Gary (Jamie Foxx), who feels he can’t lose when the truth is on his side.What to Watch For: The cast includes Jurnee Smollett, Alan Ruck, Pamela Reed, Bill Camp, and Mamoudou Athie.Word on the Street: Maggie Betts, the film’s director, won the Palm Springs International Film Festival Directors to Watch award for the movie.My Take: The film is based on true events.Rating: RRelease Date: Exclusively in Theaters on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: Foe is set in the near future, where Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal) farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior’s family for generations. Their life is turned upside down when a stranger (Aaron Pierre) shows up at their doorstep with a startling proposal. It’s a proposal that will change their lives forever.What to Watch For: Filmmaker Garth Davis’s first feature film, Lion (2016), was nominated for six Academy Awards.Word on the Street: The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Iain Reid. The movie rights were sold before the book was even published.My Take: I think that Saoirse Ronan is one of the most talented actors working today.Rating: RRelease Date: Premiering on Paramount+ on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: Pet Sematary: Bloodlines returns to where it all began in 1969, where Jud Crandall (Jackson White) dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow. Jud and his friends find out the town has dark secrets. And he must face his family’s connection to an ancient evil that could destroy everything in its path.What to Watch For: This is a prequel to the 2019 Pet Sematary film set 50 years before that movie.Word on the Street: The film will explain why Jud Crandall stayed in the town that he was desperate to leave.My Take: Any film based on characters created by the master of horror, Stephen King, is a movie that I have to see.Rating: RRelease Date: In theatres on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: She Came to Me is about composer Steven (Peter Dinklage), who is having writer’s block, and his new opera is due in two weeks. His wife (Anne Hathaway) suggests he take the dog for a walk. Steven finds himself in a bar and meets a tugboat captain (Marisa Tomei), who invites him to her boat. He has a one-night stand with the captain and is inspired to write his new opera. The problem is the tugboat captain loves being Steven’s newfound muse.What to Watch For: Filmmaker Rebecca Miller is best known for her award-winning films Maggie’s Plan (2016) and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009).Word on the Street: the movie was the opening night film for the 2023 Berlinale Film Festival.My Take: I have followed Marisa Tomei’s career since she was Maggie Lauten on the first season of A Different World back in 1987.Rating: RRelease Date: In theatres on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: In Strange Way of Life, Silva (Pedro Pascal) and Jake (Ethan Hawke) were once more than just friends working on a ranch. After twenty-five years, Silva has ridden a horse across the desert to visit his friend Jake. With friendship and love behind them, Silva wants Jake, now a sheriff, not to hunt down Silva’s son, who is wanted for murder. How far will what happened in the past keep Jake from doing his duty?What to Watch For: The movie is from Academy Award-winning director Pedro Almodóvar (Talk to Me (2003)).Word on the Street: The film played at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, nominated for the Queer Palm award.My Take: I love westerns and am a fan of Pedro Almodóvar, especially his films The Skin I Live In (2011) and Volver (2006).Rating: RRelease Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Thursday, October 5, 2023.Summary: Totally Killer occurs when the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer” returns after 35 years. The killer attacks Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) and is somehow transported back to 1987. Jamie has just a few days to stop the killer from committing his first kill. If she doesn’t, she will be stuck in the 80s.What to Watch For: Filmmaker Nahnatchka Khan is an Emmy-nominated producer/writer and director. Her first feature film, Always Be My Maybe, was nominated for Best Female Director Award at the 2019 Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards.Word on the Street: Kiernan Shipka is most famous for playing Sally Draper on Mad Men and Sabrina Spellman on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.My Take: One of my favorite comedy actors, Julie Bowen, plays Jamie’s mom in the film.Rating: RRelease Date: In theatres on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: Dicks: The Musical is a story about two business rivals (Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) who find out they’re twins. They come up with a wild plan to reconcile their parents.What to Watch For: This musical has a cast that includes three-time Tony winner Nathan Lane and Emmy winner Megan Mullally as the pair’s parents, along with Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Yang, Nick Offerman, Danielle Perez, Oscar Montoya, D’Arcy Carden, and Blake Daniel.Word on the Street: The film won the Midnight Madness People’s Choice Award at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.My Take: The film is based on Sharp and Jackson’s two-man comedy act.Rating: N/ARelease Date: In select theatres on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: The documentary Joan Baez I Am a Noise reflects on the life and career of singer/songwriter and activist Joan Baez. After 60 years, she shares personal struggles that she had kept private until now.What to Watch For: The 2023 Berlin International Film Festival nominated the film for the Panorama Audience Award.Word on the Street: The film uses archival footage and interviews with Bob Dylan, Bill Clinton, Michael Moore, and David Harris.My Take: I love she is talking about her struggles with depression and anxiety, hoping that her frankness will help others.Rating: RRelease Date: In theaters on Friday, October 6, 2023.Summary: Hanna and Liv (Julia Garner and Jessica Henwick) are US tourists backpacking across Australia. In need of extra money, they sign up to work for a few weeks at a remote pub in the outback. The job at first is fun.
