Throw in some fun activities, a little adventure, and great Southern food, and you’ve got a recipe for the perfect trip to Atlanta with teens!We love the Southern US — so much that we moved here! There’s so much to see and do, usually while enjoying gorgeous weather. While traveling the United States full-time, we stayed just outside Atlanta, Georgia for two weeks and spent our time getting to know the Big Peach.In this post, I’ll share a variety of fun things to do in Atlanta with teens, but many of these suggestions will entertain visitors of all ages. Let’s start exploring!Table of ContentsAtlanta is home to one of several Six Flags theme parks found across the country, and it’s a great way to spend a day, especially with teenagers who love thrill rides!From the giant hills and drops of Goliath to the classic wooden Georgia Cyclone, there are roller coasters for everyone. And for those who prefer less of a thrill, there are plenty of calmer rides, including kiddie rides for the little ones.In the summer, you can enjoy the water rides and the giant Calypso Bay Wave Pool, and in the fall visit the Halloween “Fright Fest” if you dare!Carter and I spent a full day at Six Flags Over Georgia, just the two of us, and we had a blast! In between running from coaster to coaster, I made him pose with the characters. He loved it.One of the top attractions I was looking forward to visiting in Atlanta was World of Coke (or, officially, World of Coca-Cola)! Our whole family spent a day exploring this unique place.&nbsp;The World of Coca-Cola offers more than just the history of America’s favorite soda. There are a ton of interactive exhibits — from a theatre showing Coca-Cola’s famous commercials through the decades, to a 4D ride, to a recreation of the original pharmacy where Coke was created.But the real treat is found in the “Taste It!” exhibit where you can sample flavors of Coke brands from all around the world. Did you know Russia has Cucumber Sprite? So refreshing!One thing about teenagers — they like to be independent and choose their own activities. One of the best places to take them is the Atlanta BeltLine.More than just a trail, the BeltLine stretches for 22 miles and is a destination on its own. You’ll find art installations, local eateries, shops, and parks all along the way.Take a bike tour or join a yoga session or a lantern parade. Check their calendar of events to see what’s happening!Atlanta’s historic Sears building has been transformed into a haven for foodies and shoppers. If your teens love a day at the mall, they’ll love exploring the variety of shops and food to be found here.Make sure to visit the rooftop amusement park, Skyline Park, for mini golf, carnival games, and an amazing view of the city skyline!Piedmont Park stretches over 200 acres and offers an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Its picturesque setting has made it a prime location for festivals, concerts, and sporting events. There’s always something happening!Rent a paddle boat on Lake Clara Meer, join in one of the many sports activities, or bring a picnic.Nature-loving teens will definitely want to make time to visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden, located within Piedmont Park. We’ve visited several botanical gardens on our travels, and Atlanta has some of the most strikingly beautiful grounds.Visit the Cascades Garden and admire the Earth Goddess, the Garden’s iconic living sculpture, or head to the Kendeda Canopy Walk and explore 40 feet in the air, among the treetops.There’s always something happening at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, so be sure to check their calendar for current events!At the Fox Theatre, you get a 2-for-1 deal — you can catch a performance of a touring Broadway show or famous comedian, while visiting a historical artifact of a bygone era.The theatre’s ornate mosque-style structure was inspired by ancient temples of the Far East, featuring a striking red and gold interior, with domes, archways, and a ceiling that resembles a starry sky. Behind-the-scenes tours are available, revealing the theatre’s rich history and design nuances.Right across from the Fox Theatre, you’ll find The Varsity. If you’re ready for lunch, stop here at this huge, iconic drive-in restaurant. Try a chili dog with some onion rings to fortify you for the rest of a fun-filled day in Atlanta!Prefer to sit and stay a while? Head for Mary Mac’s Tea Room, also near the Fox Theatre, for a true Southern dining experience. Here you can enjoy classic dishes like fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread. The atmosphere is welcoming and perfect for families.When we visit a new location, we like to learn about the local history. In Atlanta, you can explore Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s childhood home, the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached, and the memorial site where he’s laid to rest.The visitor center showcases exhibitions about the Civil Rights Movement, offering insights into the life and legacy of this great leader. If you’re roadschooling, this is a perfect place to visit and incorporate into your history lessons!Animal-loving teens won’t want to miss Zoo Atlanta. Located in Grant Park, the zoo has over 1,500 animals to visit and observe, including giant pandas.Zoo Atlanta places a strong emphasis on conservation efforts, aiming to enlighten visitors about the importance of preserving the natural world. You’ll also find interactive zones, keeper talks, and wildlife shows — perfect for combining a day of fun with learning.Teens who are history buffs will definitely want to stop by the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. At the Giants of the Mesozoic exhibit, you can visit life-sized replicas of the Argentinosaurus, which is one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered, and its predator, the Giganotosaurus.Younger teens and tweens will enjoy exploring the Adventure in Science exhibits that offer hands-on learning experiences in various scientific topics.When you’re done exploring the museum, head outside to the adjacent Fernbank Forest where you can enjoy a walk through the forest and experience nature up close.One of the largest aquariums in the world, the Georgia Aquarium is a must-visit for teens interested in marine life. The aquarium offers immersive exhibits, like the Ocean Voyager tunnel, which allows visitors to be surrounded by aquatic creatures and simulates the sensation of walking on the ocean floor.At the Cold Water Quest exhibit, you can see animals like sea otters, beluga whales, and African penguins. Visit the Tropical Diver exhibit to take in a mesmerizing display of various species of jellyfish, beautifully lit and showcased in a serene environment.This is another great location for roadschoolers, as the aquarium offers educational programs, interactive experiences, and teaches about preserving the world’s oceans.After you visit the Georgia Aquarium, head to The Yard Milkshake Bar nearby for a sweet treat. We love their over-the-top milkshake creations, especially those topped with a donut or an entire piece of cheesecake!Creative teens with a love of art and culture should head for the High Museum of Art. You could spend a whole day walking among the blend of classic and contemporary art exhibits, while admiring the architectural wonder of the building itself.We’ve found that art museums are a great way to start conversations with our kids. We ask them which pieces catch their attention, what they think about them, and how they feel when they look at them. This helps them remember what they’ve seen later on and to develop a sense of what kind of art appeals to them.The museum offers special programming just for teens, including artist-led workshops and Teen Nights where you can mingle and create with other young art lovers.Short on time? Just stop by the High’s Carroll Slater Sifly Piazza where you can visit one of the many rotating interactive and immersive outdoor installations before heading to the next destination on your list!If you’re hungry after your visit to the High Museum of Art, head to nearby Farm Burger. This place is going on our must-visit list, because Google reviewers absolutely rave about their food. Try a cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake, all made from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.Escape rooms are lots of fun for teens, especially those who enjoy solving puzzles or mysteries. Choose from themes such as a bank heist or time-travel, and then use all the clues in the room to find your way out!You have your choice of a bunch of different escape rooms across the city. Some of the highest-rated options include:If you’re up for driving about 30 minutes away from downtown Atlanta, you’ll be rewarded by your visit to Stone Mountain Park.The iconic Stone Mountain displays an intricate carving of Civil War legends Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis, and the park is built out from the perfect viewing area.Teens are sure to enjoy the Summit Skyride, a cable car that takes you up to the top of the mountain where you can admire breathtaking views of the Atlanta Skyline.
