Justin Brownlee capped another brilliant performance with a huge 3-point shot with 23.4 seconds left as Gilas Pilipinas upended hosts and defending champions China, 77-76, in the semifinal of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou.Brownlee scored 33 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, and his back-to-back triples in the final minute fueled a closing 10-0 run by Gilas that sealed the huge win.Gilas set up a rematch with Jordan, which beat Chinese Taipei in the other semifinal, for the gold medal on Friday.The Philippines now has a chance to win its first gold medal in the Asian Games since 1962. Gilas last competed for the gold medal at the Beijing Asian Games in 1990 -- when the first all-pro national team settled for the silver.For China, it will be the first time as Asian Games hosts that they will not win the men's 5x5 basketball gold medal. They now face Chinese Taipei for bronze.China started hot and it looked like they would waltz to an easy win against the Philippines. Their strategy of double-teaming Brownlee limited the Ginebra import to just six points on five shots in the first half, which ended with Gilas staring at a 48-30 deficit.China's length bothered the Gilas offense, forcing them to miss all of their eight 3-point attempts in the first half. With ace point guard Zhao Rui running the show, the hosts ran every chance they got, jumping out to a 14-4 lead that ballooned to 20 late in the second quarter.But Tim Cone, the most successful PBA coach of all time, made a major adjustment in the at halftime. Gilas went small with only one big on the floor for long stretches. The quicker lineup disrupted China's passing lanes and allowed Gilas to run more often, resulting in better looks for Brownlee in transition.Once he got in a rhythm, Gilas followed suit. The lead was down to 12 after three quarters. Cone made another bold move in the fourth quarter by sending in guard Kevin Alas, who has had an up-and-down Asian Games and is the only player on the roster who has not been previously coached by Cone. Alas delivered, scoring five straight points that kept Gilas within striking distance at 71-67.But the breaks suddenly went China's way, and it looked like they would finally put Gilas away for good. Scottie Thompson, who put up 13 points and 8 rebounds, missed two free throws that could have cut the lead to two. Du Runwang hit a 3 to make it 74-67, then after a timeout Gilas committed a five-second inbound violation that led to a layup by Hu Jinqi. Just like that, it was now 76-67 for China with only 3:06 left.After CJ Perez, the ever-reliable scorer off the bench, scored on a drive to cut it to 76-69, it was Brownlee time. The naturalized import rebounded his own miss for a putback, then after a Gilas steal, he hit a step-back 3 to pull Gilas within two. After a China miss, Brownlee buried a pull-up triple that gave Gilas its first and only lead of the game.Zhang Zhenlin, who played well for China in the World Cup, had a chance to be a hero for the sell-out crowd but missed an open midrange jumper with five seconds left.Improbably, Gilas had pulled off a second huge win over China, this one even more significant than the Jordan Clarkson-led rout in Manila last month.The Philippines now takes on Jordan at 8 p.m. on Friday. Whatever happens, this hastily-assembled Gilas team has exceeded expectations by making it to the gold medal game.They'll need one last bit of magic from Brownlee against the tournament's only unbeaten team -- which blew them out by 25 earlier during group play. In Rondae Jefferson, Jordan has the only other naturalized player in Hangzhou who can match Brownlee move for move.But after what happened on Wednesday, Gilas has plenty of reason to believe.
