From local street vendors, to beautifully designed cafes, unique menu offerings, and emphasis on fresh ingredients, there’s really not much more you can ask for.Each time I visit Bali, I always make it a goal to try at least one new meal. One of my more recent eats was the trendy gorgeous blue Smoothie Bowl by Peloton Supershop (a fully-vegan cafe in Canggu, Bali). While they call their signature blue smoothie “The Blue Island,” more and more people thought the color looked like the sea, so they started calling it the Mermaid Smoothie Bowl!And the secret to its gorgeous blue hue? Blue Spirulina!Table of ContentsThe short answer is: no.Blue spirulina is derived from a blue-green algae,&nbsp;called Arthrospira platensis (spirulina). Spirulina is typically a deep green color with a a slight blue pigment. In making blue spirulina, phycocyanin (the blue-hued antioxidant) is extracted from the “regular” spirulina, resulting in blue spirulina.As a bonus to its gorgeous color, blue spirulina is a great source of vitamins, minerals, protein, carotenoids, and antioxidants!As smoothies are typically sipped through a straw,&nbsp;they are thinner in consistency compared to smoothie bowls, which&nbsp;usually use less liquid (milk, juice, yogurt, etc.) to yield a spoonable, ice cream-like consistency.RELATED: Peanut Butter and Jelly Protein Smoothie (GF, DF, Vegan-Friendly)Since my visit to Peloton Supershop in Bali, I’ve been loving Blue Spirulina Smoothies. But now that I live in the United States, I’ve found similar Smoothie Bowls with Blue Spirulina to cost anywhere from $7.50 to $12.50 per serving.So I thought, “hey, why not make my own?” And here we are today with my all-time favorite, go-to Mermaid Blue Spirulina Smoothie recipe!The most expensive ingredient in this recipe is, you guessed it, the blue spirulina powder! That said, this blue spirulina powder costs $29.97 for a 60g pouch – which is enough to make our Mermaid Smoothie Bowl recipe 60 (yes, SIXTY!) times. That equals to a whopping 120 Blue Spirulina smoothie bowls, at just 25 cents worth of blue spirulina per smoothie bowl!In total, after accounting for the cost of bananas, mango, milk, and honey (not including toppings), each Mermaid Smoothie Bowl costs less than $2!While it used to be a whole lot harder to get your hands on blue spirulina, there are now many online retailers and natural food stores that sell them today.This is my favorite blue spirulina powder. It’s the most neutral tasting, and yields such a vibrant color!Here are some other options you may consider:In a&nbsp;high-speed&nbsp;blender,&nbsp;add the banana, mangos or pineapple,&nbsp;blue spirulina powder, and 1 cup milk. Blend until combined and consistency is thick and smooth. If preferred, add more milk to thin the blue smoothie to your desired consistency.Divide the smoothie into a 2 bowls ( I used&nbsp;these coconut bowls&nbsp;).
