Developers want to put an 80-megawatt array in Brown and Clermont counties.Ohio regulators have given the go-ahead for a big solar project in southwestern Ohio that it put on hold a few months ago.The Ohio Power Siting Board, which must sign off on any major new source of electricity in the state before construction can begin, on Thursday approved the Nestlewood Solar Farm, an 80-megawatt solar project planned for Brown and Clermont counties.The board voted to pause the project this past October, a move that environmentalists feared would jeopardize solar and other renewable energy projects in the state.Sam Randazzo, who serves as the board’s chairman by virtue of his job as chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, had expressed concerns about a number of aspects of the project, ranging from the effect it would have on the viability of agricultural land to the protection of the Kirtland’s snake, an endangered species."While we previously identified some things that needed attention in the Nestlewood case, I want to thank the project developer and stakeholders, including local officials, for their constructive effort to address these through the submission of additional evidence and modifications to their agreement proposing to resolve issues of fact and law," Randazzo said during the meeting Thursday.The project, located in Lewis and Clark townships in Brown County and Tate and Franklin townships in Clermont County, will consist of an array of ground-mounted photovoltaic panels capable of generating 80 megawatts of electricity. The array, which will include an electricity transmission line, will encompass 464 acres within a 610-acre project area.An industry group praised the decision to move ahead and work with project developers to address concerns."Utility-scale solar is a shining example of how Ohio can leverage its natural resources, manufacturers, and communities to build wealth and prosperity for Ohioans. Together, this industry is creating and retaining jobs that can provide meaningful revenue to Ohio’s rural governments and communities during this challenging time," Andy Bowers, a representative of the Utility Scale Solar Energy Coalition, said in a statement.The group says projects totaling 500 megawatts have broken ground in Ohio in the first three months of 2020, led by the 200-megawatt Hillcrest Solar project in Brown County. mawilliams@dispatch.com@BizMarkWilliams
