Not only did they return to .500 in London, but in the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup, the Jaguars got back to .500 on the season. After a disappointing two weeks in weeks two and three, the Jaguars found a way to turn things around. Securing wins can go a long way in what’s shaping up to be a competitive division.But, before trying to determine the division winner, it’s important to identify what was learned from the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup. From players who slayed and performed at a high level to players who despite the win, bombed and struggled in the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup.Jaguars CB Darious Williams (31) – Kirsty Wigglesworth/AP PhotoThe star of the week, Darious Williams, had an incredible day for the Jaguars. The Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup was an interesting one due to the still-unknown passing ability of Desmond Ridder, and the Jaguars’ pass defense would need to shut down that facet of the game to allow for more players in the box to stop Bijan Robinson. It’s safe to say that the pass defense was incredible for the Jaguars vs. Falcons game, and Darious Williams stands out the most, thanks to his game-changing play.In the second quarter, as the Falcons just entered Jaguars territory, Darious Williams jumped a route and picked Desmond Ridder off, returning it 61 yards for the pick-six and giving the Jaguars a 17-0 lead nearing the end of the first half.It was an incredible play, and maybe the best play that Darious Williams has had in a Jaguars uniform. Williams secured his first interception as a Jaguar, and it came at a great time to not only stop a Falcons drive but completely flip the script and give the Jaguars a three-possession lead.It’s safe to say Darious Williams had a huge day in London, and he would be the undisputed ‘slay of the week’ if it weren’t for another defender for the Jaguars.Jaguars OLB Josh Allen (41) and CB Tre Herndon (37) – Kirsty Wigglesworth/AP PhotoOnce again, Josh Allen makes his presence on the field well-known. After a disappointing week three, where pressure was seldom generated, Josh Allen made his mark on the Falcons’ offensive line. An important matchup in the Jaguars vs. Falcons game was the pass rush, and Josh Allen made that matchup a win for the Jaguars. His consistent pressure and sacks at big moments made Desmond Ridder a sitting duck and made his life a living hell in the pocket.Another week, another three-sack performance for the Jaguars best pass rusher. Ho-hum.Josh Allen is an invaluable piece to this team, and the pressure generated by him and the rest of the defensive front is exactly what the Jaguars have been looking for. There’s still room to improve for the rest of the defensive line, but not so much for Josh Allen after another dominant performance.If there was an MVP of the game, it has to be Josh Allen. Darious Williams, with the pick-six, is an incredible play, but a lot of drives were halted thanks to Josh Allen. At the end of the game, Allen sacked and forced a fumble on Desmond Ridder, which sealed the fate of the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup as a Jaguars win.Jaguars S Andre Cisco (5) – Maxime Le Pihif/Jacksonville JaguarsStaying on the defensive side of the ball, Andre Cisco had an incredible day overall in the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup. While he didn’t have three sacks nor a pick-six, Cisco did pick Ridder off (on the play right after the Ridder pick-six, no less) and had an overall outstanding day.Between efficient coverage, quality tackling at every level, and great defense against the run, Andre Cisco was the most well-rounded player for the Jaguars in week four. Cisco had a demoralizing interception, which could’ve put the Falcons down four possessions at the half if the offense hadn’t stalled.Not a major play in the grand scheme of the Jaguars vs. Falcons game, but Andre Cisco tackling Bijan Robinson for a loss on the first play was a huge boon for the Jaguars. Momentum is real, and the Jaguars got off to a great start by stuffing Bijan Robinson. If Robinson had got off to a strong start, it would’ve been a long day for the Jaguars defense. But Cisco stopping Bijan set the tone from the very first offensive play for the Falcons.While his impact wasn’t as flashy as Josh Allen or Darious Williams, Cisco deserves a mention for his play in London.Jaguars OG Brandon Scherff (68) – Maxime Le Pihig/Jacksonville JaguarsIt’s been a rough season for the Jaguars’ interior offensive line (we’ll get to the other components of that group shortly), but in the meantime, let’s talk about Brandon Scherff, who deserves a mention for his performance in the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup.Scherff has had a rough year up until this point, but he played incredibly for the Jaguars against the Falcons. According to PFF, on 38 pass-blocking snaps, Brandon Scherff didn’t allow a single pressure, which earned him an 87.5 pass-blocking grade. After signing a big deal with Jacksonville, Scherff hasn’t lived up to the hype or the contract.But his performance in the Jaguars vs. Falcons game proves that he’s capable of being an elite offensive lineman. Scherff had his best game by far and was a major reason why Lawrence was able to throw the ball so well, even against a tough Falcons defense.While his run-blocking wasn’t as great as you’d like, his pass-blocking was more than impactful, which is all you can ask for from an offensive lineman. He slayed this week and has begun to shift more toward the offensive lineman that the Jaguars have expected out of him.Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence (16) – Kirsty Wigglesworth/AP PhotoWhat a turnaround from a week ago, where it felt like the entire Jaguars roster could’ve been in the bomb section for the week. In week four, the Jaguars found success as they beat the Falcons, and there wasn’t much to look at negatively about this game. There will always be a couple of missed plays or subpar play, but the majority of the Jaguars roster put together a solid day.But Tyler Shatley and Luke Fortner are the two that are most likely to be considered bombs for the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup. The Jaguars offensive line has struggled in 2023, and the main issue of that group has been the left guard and center position. In this Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup, these two positions were once again the worst part of the Jaguars offensive line.If there was one thing that the Jaguars couldn’t do well was run the ball up the middle. As the game was nearing its end and the Jaguars were trying to burn some clock, the Jaguars couldn’t run the ball up the middle with Travis Etienne Jr. The run blocking wasn’t productive and limited the offensive capabilities for the Jaguars run game.Not only was the run blocking an issue, but each of the Jaguars’ interior offensive linemen also allowed a pressure (with Fortner giving up two), and Luke Fortner also gave up a sack. While the Jaguars found success overall, the two interior offensive line positions have been troublesome for the Jaguars, especially with the importance of protecting the Jaguars franchise quarterback.It’s always a good week when the only bombs of the week are two players who had mediocre days. There were some obvious miscues, like when Trevor Lawrence just missed JaMycal Hasty on a deep touchdown throw or when Christian Kirk was open in the end zone, and Lawrence didn’t see him.Minor miscues were a much-needed diversion for the Jaguars after weeks of finding new ways to shoot themselves in the foot. An exciting day for the defense and positive steps for the offense means that there weren’t a lot of players deserving of a bomb this week. On the other hand, there were a lot of players that slayed this week, with a lot of the offensive players being left out.Christian Kirk has continued his short-yardage usefulness paired with the occasional deep shot. Evan Engram has been one of the better tight ends in the NFL after signing an extension right before the season. Trevor Lawrence also continued his solid season, except this week, he finally didn’t have brutal drops when it mattered most, paired with turnovers being corrected.Overall, the Jaguars vs. Falcons matchup provided the Jaguars with a lot of great performances with a spattering of solid ones. It’s exactly what the doctor ordered for the Jaguars after multiple weeks of self-inflicted wounds and disappointing mistakes.Share:
