(WSYX)Mental health emergencies was a big topic of discussion Tuesday at City Hall.Mayor Andrew Ginther and the Columbus City Council stressed the importance of responding to mental health emergencies with the proper resources.According to community leaders, the answer is not always police officers."Historically, police have been the first responders to every societal problem. Mental illnesses, substance abuse, to noise complaints, traffic, and speeding. You dial 911, and no matter the issue, you see a cruiser in your driveway with flashing lights," said City Council President Shannon Hardin."Police play an important role, but they can't do it all, nor should they have to," said Mayor Ginther.City Council’s Public Safety Committee hosted a public hearing to give an update on the four crisis groups created by the city three years ago. Those four units, known as the 'Alternative Crisis Response,' handle emergency situations that do not require a police response. According to city leaders, these crisis groups have been delivering positive results.“My number one priority is the public’s safety and wellbeing of our residents. Public safety is not a privilege. It is a right. You are seeing public safety evolve. It’s not just fire and police responding to calls,” said Councilmember Emmanuel Remy, Chair of Public Safety.City Council &amp; the mayor stressing the importance of mental health and making sure those in distress get the help they need - from the right people.“It’s all about getting the right response at the right time for neighbors. What we need is mental health services and addiction services for folks that are in crisis. The last place those folks belong are jail or the ER,” added Ginther.Alternative Crisis Response goes to emergencies involving a mental health crisis, drug overdoses, and other emergencies to de-escalate situations and offer proper resources. Resources police officers typically do not specialize in. "This allows our officers to focus on fighting violent crime in our neighborhoods as opposed to responding to every call for every type of need. Letting them focus on what we need them to do the most." Said Ginther.According to data shared at the hearing, the Alternative Crisis Response - called ‘The Right Response Unit'- connects callers in crisis with the proper mental health resources.So far this year, 30% of calls answered by the unit did not require police response.
