Skip to contentHomeLocal NewsCanada’s 3rd annual Truth and Reconcilation Day was recognized on Oct. 2 in DuncanChadd CawsonPreviousNext/ExpandPreviousNextSome felt the rain represented the tears of all the children that never returned home from residential schools to their families, but a wet morning did not hinder hundreds upon hundreds of people as they donned orange and gather at the Si’em Lelum Soccer fields for the Every Child Matters March held in Duncan on Oct. 2.The event took place in recognition of Canada’s third National Day for Truth and Reconcilation, established following an announcement in May, 2021, that a possible 215 unmarked graves had been found at the site of the Kamloops Residential School.The event, hosted by Cowichan Tribes, started with few guest speakers, who delivered the main message of gratitude for all those who attended to march for all of the children that didn’t return home to their loved ones from residential schools. For more than 150 years, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children were taken from their families, communities, and were unable to express their culture.Phyllis Jack Webstad’s story first sparked the Orange Shirt Day movement. Jack Webstad attended St. Joseph’s Mission residential school at the age of six. She showed up the first day wearing a bright orange shirt that her grandmother had given her, only to have it taken away. Jack Webstad is the founder of the Orange Shirt Society and the Orange Shirt Day Movement, operating out of Williams Lake. She first started it in 2013 to raise awareness and educate the masses about what really happened inside the walls of residential schools and to drive home the message that Every Child Matters.The Every Child Matters March in Duncan, which began just after 9:30 a.m., was led by the RCMP. It began down Canada Avenue, turned up Jubilee Street and past City Hall, and then made it way back to where the walk began. People of all ages and some animals came out to mark the day.
