Fern Creek and Western also reported three incidents during the same time, but those schools won't receive detectors until the second phase of implementation.Meanwhile, the JCPS board was introduced to the district's new police chief, Todd Kessinger, who retired from Louisville Metro Police in 2019 after about 20 years.Kessinger joined the district in August and has since hired 11 new people to work within the department. Among those hires are new school patrol officers who will be responsible for helping to monitor the weapons detectors.The patrol officers, who are sworn police, will be tasked with spending about 90 minutes each morning at those high schools as students make their way through the detectors. If the equipment detects a weapon, the officer would be the one who conducts a search.There are still 10 vacancies for this role, and the district will be issuing a request for proposals to hire additional officers for this specific duty on contract once more schools have detectors installed."It is highly likely that we will need more people to get the rest of those schools the support that they need," Chief of Staff Katy Deferrari said.More:JCPS official reassigned in wake of busing plan disasterThe goal is to have detectors operating in the second half of high schools by summer break then all middle schools by the start of next school year.
