Around 4:45 a.m., he made contact with a woman driving a black 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer. At some point during the contact, the officer discharged at least one round that struck the woman.The woman died as a result of her injuries. RECOMMENDED: Las Cruces man sentenced to 30 years in prison for connection in 2-year-old girl's deathPolice officials said they will not release the woman’s name until her family has been notified. The officer sustained minor injuries that did not require hospitalization.The officer has been placed on standard administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.The Officer-involved Incident Task Force includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. The Las Cruces Police Department held a news conference at 4 p.m. Tuesday to provide limited information on the incident. In the news conference, Interim Chief of the Las Cruces Police Department Jeremy Story said:When there's an officer-involved shooting, the officer-involved task force is activated which is comprised of investigators from the Las Cruces police officers, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s office, the state police and the New Mexico University police department as well as the district attorney's office KFOX14/CBS4 reporter Jonathan Mejia spoke with a neighbor who lives near Burley Court Housing Authority Apartments.The neighbor said that a lot happens in that area, so much so, they have started to look elsewhere to live."I knew this was going to happen. There's too much going on in this neighborhood," Zuniga said. "We've started looking for places for my mom to move somewhere else."The neighbor also said they're happy police have been making their rounds in this neighborhood. "I’m glad they drive in here once in a while," Zuniga said. Adding that while a woman died, the neighbor trusts the police had no other choice.
