Barbara Augsdorferbaugsdorfer@savannahnow.comView CommentsThe Savannah-Chatham County public school system is still seeking donations to purchase 3,500 more electronic devices for students even though the school year will end on May 15.Since switching to distance learning in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the district has been working to give students at-home access to devices.In March, SCCPSS surveyed schools and families about their technology devices and connectivity and acted accordingly. “At the start of [distance learning], we did survey students about connectivity, access to a device and other technology questions,” wrote Stacy Jennings, director of communications for the district, in an April 23 email.“In a strategic move to ensure technology barriers were addressed, the district pulled devices from schools at the end of March for distribution to students,” according to an April 20 press release from the district.More are still needed. “We’ve distributed approximately 3,000 devices,” Jennings continued in her email. “But we need around 3,500 more.” Several local corporate sponsors have stepped up recently to donate funds and/or Chromebooks for students. International Paper, Gulfstream, Choate Construction, and Hussey Gay Bell are just some of the district’s most recent benefactors. As of Wednesday, April 29, $80,600 has been donated, according to the district website.Jennings stated in her email that the devices belong to the district and are loaned to the students. The district also manages and maintains the devices for the students.As additional funds are received, the district will make purchases for distribution to those in need, a district press release stated. Donations can be made by texting “TECHNOLOGY” to 80888 or through the link on the district website at ​.District’s Technology HistoryIncorporating digital devices into the classroom is not new for SCCPSS. In 2016 the was to place enough computers or electronic devices in the schools so there was one computer for every three students. In Fiscal Year 2016, “the district had met this goal in 47 out of 49 schools,” the technology report dated Oct. 26, 2017, stated. “Overall, the district had approximately a 1.5:1 computer ratio for students using all federal, state, local, and equipment five years or older.”Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) funding was recently used for technology purchases and upgrades. In February, students at and Mercer Middle Schools received Apple laptop computers purchased with ESPLOST III funds as part of the announced in August 2019.View Comments
