It’s hard but so important to plan who’ll look after your dog, cat or other pet after your death. Our animals need us to take care of those details now, while we’re still alive.Here’s what a reader asked on my post about aging alone:“I live in my own home presently with 3 dogs and other pets,” says Lovey on Who Will Take Care of You When You’re Old? “I can still walk but have a very bad back that slows me down quite a bit. I just try to take one day at a time. I took care of my mother, who passed away three months after I lost my husband, so that was kind of a double whammy, but I have no one to care for me. And a very large concern with me is who will look after my beloved pets after I’m gone?”&nbsp; Some older people can’t move into care homes or 55+ living residences because of “no pets” policies. Many care homes allow a certain number of dogs, cats and other pets, but there’s often a waiting list. It’s also expensive and stressful to move into a senior living facility – especially if your dog or cat doesn’t adapt well to new environments.Even if you have lots of family and friends, you may still ask “Who will look after my dog when I die?” Even smaller animals – birds, lizards, fish, hamsters – need to be taken care of. If you’re wondering who will look after your cat after your death, you are not alone.Being married, living common law, or even living in a seniors residence is no guarantee your dog or cat will be looked after! When you die, the environment you lived in and the people you lived with will change.Your pet’s life will change, too.Now – while you’re still alive – is the time to plan who will look after your pets. Now is the only time you have! Now is the only time you can take care of them, love them, and ensure their well-being.This isn’t a list of people who will look after your dog or cat because I don’t know your pets, living situation, financial matters or family members. Instead, I want to share ideas on how to be positive, calm and hopeful about your pet’s life after your death.If you lost your cat, read When You Miss Your Cat More Than You Can Say.Your dog or cat can feel the tension and stress that the thought “who will look after my pet when I’m gone?” brings. The anxiety, stress and terror affects your dog or cat. That energy is negative, depressing, hopeless, and bleak.&nbsp;Living in fear and anxiety doesn’t just make us and our pets unhappy. It makes us physically unhealthy, and can even contribute to disease and early death. Even if we live just as long, we certainly won’t be happy. Our cats and dogs pick up on our distress. They may calm us down and cheer us up, but they pay a price.You may not feel like you’re solving the pet caretaking problem by dealing with your own fear and stress, but it’s an important first step. You’re more likely to find solutions and solve problems if you’re calm, balanced, focused and peaceful.Instead of focusing on what you don’t want (not finding anyone who will take care of your dog or cat when you die), think about what you do want. You want a loving caregiver for your pet, right? Focusing on that is a positive, proactive step in the right direction.Your thoughts and feelings lead to actions. Your actions will lead you to the right people and help you make the right decisions about your pet’s future.How often do you spend just sitting and being with your dog or cat? What about talking – do you ever ask your dog or cat questions? And even more importantly, do you listen to what your furry companion is trying to tell you?Get comfortable with your dog or cat. Take a few more slow, deep breaths. You might even bring a cup of tea or a pet treat, or play music you both enjoy. Create a warm, loving, open, accepting space for you and your pet.This is the perfect time to ask your pets how they feel about life without you.When you and your pet are both calm and comfortable, after you’ve taken a few deep breaths, put a hand on your pet. Slowly run your hand down your dog’s side, or rub under your cat’s chin. Listen to their breathing, feel their heart beating, let your fingers really feel their furry warmth.Ask your pet these questions:Take your time. Let thoughts, images and ideas rise in your mind. If you doubt this exercise or think it’s stupid to ask your pets who will take care of them after your death, allow those thoughts to come and go.This isn’t a one-time practice. Sit with your pets several times over the next few weeks, and listen for their wisdom. Allow their energy to flow through you. Even if they don’t “tell” you who’ll look after them when you’re gone, you’ll be in a much better frame of mind to find the right caregiver.Have you already decided who will take care of your pets when you’re gone? I didn’t know it’d be one of my ideas on how to find someone to look after your dog or cat until the moment I wrote the words. I didn’t think about suggesting it; the idea just appeared out of nowhere. That happens often when I write, and I love it.Asking your pet for guidance came to me because I was writing. The act of writing by hand slows your brain, focuses your energy, and helps you come up with ideas. When you write, ideas come to you.After you sit with your dog or cat – or during your conversation – make a list of all the possible options. Just jot down the ideas that came to you when you asked who will take care of your cat or dog when you’re gone. Allow even the craziest, most random idea to spill out of you.Eventually, you’ll follow up on one of those ideas. You’ll make a phone call, run into the right person, or find an animal organization.
