Well, I had not seen omelets in a bag done, but after seeing it done last weekend, I am sold on the idea. Omelets in a bag are perfect for camping or if have a group to feed breakfast to at home to make individualized requests for eggs, quickly.Who needs a dirty pan when you can just throw baggies away!! Plus no waiting your turn for the pan. You can cook a whole bunch of omelets at one time in a pan of boiling water.Jump to:The ingredients for the omelettes in a bag are just like the ingredients for standard omelets. You will need these things to make the omelets:Start by breaking two eggs into a FREEZER ziploc bag. Add a tablespoon or two of the ingredients of your choice using tongs or utensils just like a traditional omelet.Then, zip the bag close and moosh it up with your hands. You know scramble it!Make sure you have written the name of each person's omelette on the bag.Then place the omelets in a bag in large pot of water at around 190 degrees for about 14-15 minutes. The rule of thumb is about six and a half to seven minutes per egg. So if you decide you want a three-egger, you will need to cook it for more than 20 minutes. Their bags are only rated to 195 degrees; boiling is 212. At the boiling point, dangerous chemicals are released, chemicals that will eventually KILL YOU. There are numerous other bags MEANT for boiling that will work for this intended process. Don't believe me. Do what I did. Some research.ReplyZippered food bags are expensive. Are they reusable after they have been boiled in? I'm afraid even being washed they would be greasy. With the prep time for each bag, then the cooking, are you really saving time? Kids can eat first while you drink your coffee and cook yours and hubby's. Still only one or two pans to wash and how dirty are they? A lot cheaper and likely healthier in a fry pan. Definitely easier for camping tho', if prepared ahead and you just pull them from the cooler and cook. There are safe, reusable products for cooking food in hot water. Reusable silicone bags can be safe, for example, but you do need to review whether they are food grade silicone, that do not contain bpa, bps, lead, latex, or phthalates, and that they can handle the temperature intended. Stasher Bags are one brand that is recommended, they are pricey, but there are other brands, too.
