Dec. 16 at the Athens Cemetery Memorial Wall which will coincide with the ceremony taking place at Arlington National Cemetery. This ceremony will recognize all military branches, including POW, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines.All states across America will then be placing wreaths on graves at the same time and as a volunteer lays the wreath on the grave, the veteran’s name will be read aloudfound itself with a surplus of wreaths during the holidays, the local chapter has been placing wreaths since 2019 when they placed 540 wreaths at the Athens cemetery. In 2020 and 2021, efforts were expanded to include Athens North and Oak Lawn cemeteries, and wreath amounts were raised to 873 wreaths in 2020, and 1,062 in 2021.The goal for 2023 is 1,400 wreaths so that they may honor more veterans than in years past and the group will be at the three Athens cemeteries and likely one or two smaller ones on the outskirts of town.The wreaths are sponsored and the group encourages Athens residents to help them honor and remember these heroes by purchasing one for $17. Wreaths must be ordered online from now until Thanksgiving Day, November 23.There are two ways to contribute to the Athens cause, including visiting www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/tx0725 where for every two wreaths sponsored, the local chapter gets three. In addition, if your loved one's grave is not marked as a veteran, go on this specific website and send a message providing the vet's name, the cemetery they are buried at, and if possible, the location within the cemetery.One may also visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/tx1238P where $5 from each wreath goes to the Athens Quilts of Valor quilting group which makes quilts for living veterans, but note there is no matching program with this option.Volunteers are always needed to place wreaths in mid-December and pick them up in mid-January. In 2021, there were 130 volunteers who laid over 1,000 wreaths in 1.5 hours.
