I was well into the article before I realized it predated COVID, it pre-dated my subscription to The Atlantic & my joy of reading everything Ed Yong writes
This is an incredibly bittersweet piece, worrying about almost everything that DID go wrong, and hoping for a miraculous ability to produce vaccines rapidly. It is full of humanity, overlaying straightforward medical & scientific info
There are no easy answers in this piece, but it DOES illuminate the challenges & where we'll want to direct our work. Well worth the read for anyone who cares about the challenge of public health in the 21st century
