The people targeted in the shooting are believed to be Wilson’s ex-colleagues, police said.AdvertisementPolice say the suspect used a handgun. It was not immediately clear how he obtained the weapon.The bloodshed in West Hempstead adds to a string of grisly shootings across the country in recent weeks.Since March 16, mass shootings have ravaged communities in Georgia, South Carolina and Colorado, leaving more than two dozen people dead and many more injured.One of the bills set to be considered by the Senate would close loopholes in the law that currently allow for some gun buyers to avoid background checks. A second measure would extend the waiting period gun buyers must undergo before they can apply for a background check.Despite the latest rash of mass shootings, Republicans in Congress remain almost unanimously opposed to both bills, complicating Schumer’s plan for swift action.Rep. Kathleen Rice, a Democrat whose district includes West Hempstead, lamented the GOP reticence after Tuesday’s shooting. “Until Congress takes action, shootings like this will continue to be the norm in our country,” Rice said. “It is disgraceful that any of my fellow lawmakers can oppose common sense gun reforms when so many innocent people continue to die.” Rep. Tom Suozzi, another New York Democrat whose district abuts West Hempsead, concurred.
