NEW!1,188sharesThe Nature Conservancy has finalized the expansion of its Cove Mountain Preserve in Perry County when it announced closure of a land purchase recently that will add more than 1,100 acres to the preserve.The $4.5 million purchase of the former White Lumber properties on the southern flank of Cove Mountain adds 1,200 acres to protected status, according to the conservancy. Most of that will be added to the preserve’s existing 353 acres in Marysville and Penn Twp. About 213 acres will be transferred to the state Game Commission to be added into adjacent game lands on Cove Mountain.“It’s an incredible opportunity to simultaneously protect critical wildlife habitat, clean water for the Susquehanna River, and an iconic Pennsylvania viewshed while expanding local recreation and tourism opportunities just outside of Harrisburg,” Lori Brennan, executive director of The Nature Conservancy in Pennsylvania and Delaware, said in the deal announcement on March 4.Now complete, the expanded preserve protects the remaining lands along Cove Mountain’s ridgeline connecting to the state game lands, the Appalachian Trail corridor, and Duncannon’s watershed lands on the northern flank of Cove Mountain.The Nature Conservancy helped Duncannon protect and improve those lands as part of its working woodlands program in 2018. The borough retains the lands, but the conservancy has helped it weed out invasive species, improve timber growth and add recreational opportunities.The conservancy acquired the first plot of land for the Cove Mountain Preserve in 2017 and soon after began improving it. That’s included cutting and marking walking trails and invasive species control. A parking area and informational kiosk is located at Wesley United Methodist Church on Sylvan Avenue in Marysville.“It’s still early in the overall planning process for the expanded Cove mountain Preserve. Right now our focus is on basic stewarding activities such as getting our signage along the property lines and addressing basic access and parking,” said Mari-Beth DeLucia, a land conservation manager with the conservancy’s Harrisburg office.She said the conservancy is hopeful they can begin discussing trail and other ideas for the lands with locals by the summer.The conservancy and other conservation groups have been working to protect the Kittatinny Ridge, of which Cove Mountain is a part, because of its and the greater Appalachian Mountain chains’ role in both mammal and bird migration on the east coast. The Kittatinny Ridge’s main line, what is known as Blue Mountain here, runs through Pennsylvania up into New Jersey and New York.Here, the Cove Mountain Preserve is open to passive recreation including hiking, bird watching, and hunting during seasons.Jim T.
