Nurses in that area wear protective equipment with hoods and hoses. They can’t eat, drink or use the bathroom. “We try and rotate people out of that unit every four hours, so they don't become too exhausted and dehydrated in there,” Collins said.New more transmissible variants of the virus may be playing a role, according to Mick, but he said pandemic fatigue and younger age groups being out and about are also factors.“It’s like water. It will find a hole to drain through. We plugged one hole by vaccinating our elderly, now it has moved on to this other open population who haven’t been vaccinated yet,” Mick said.All Mainers 16 and older became eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine on April 7.
