Would they legalize crack cocaine in this city? Would they legalize fentanyl in this city? They would tell you: Hell no,” he said.But not all of the candidates at the forum said they’d push to legalize those drugs.Andrew Yang, the frontrunner in the mayor’s race, said Tuesday he would not push for hard drugs to be legalized.“I’m excited about the legalization of marijuana,” he said. “But I’m not for decriminalizing fentanyl, heroin and crack cocaine.”The union’s president, Jake Lamonda, didn’t touch the subject of drugs during Tuesday’s announcement, but highlighted the union’s concerns about public safety moving forward.“As fire officers, we have witnessed our city at the best of times and also the worst of times. Public safety is essential to the success of our city. As we come out of the other side of this pandemic, there will be many challenges that we face,” said Lamonda. “Our next mayor needs to understand these challenges. Our next mayor needs to understand our communities. The UFOA is convinced Eric is the person to meet these challenges head on.”The nod is the latest development in the arms race for union approval and get-out-the-vote might as the June 22 primary approaches.
