With daily life uprooted for many people due to the coronavirus pandemic, local charities and volunteers have been overwhelmed by the large number of people who suddenly need help in metro Atlanta.Yet, there’s no shortage of organizations trying to do their part, especially in the Atlanta area.Lisa Baker, a volunteer with the Food4Life Atlanta Survival Program, said she’s encouraged by the number of people who are volunteering their time to help. “The first couple of days, I kept hitting refresh on our database, and it was kinda scary watching how many volunteers signed up,” she said. “We have more than 900.”Concrete Jungle executive director Katherine Kennedy shares the same sentiment. Her organization also delivers groceries to hundreds of needy families in Atlanta.“The most moving thing is how many individuals in our community have just jumped in,” she said. “People are volunteering their time and working essentially a part-time job to make this grocery delivery service happen.”In fact, when people need it most, these organizations and programs offer community-driven ways to help and give — right in your own backyard.“When you give locally, you can be tangibly connected to the end result of what your money is doing,” Kennedy said. “Every single day, we are distributing food, and you can see where we’re going and what your money is buying.”The Atlanta Journal-Constitution compiled and categorized a list of 100 local charities, programs and nonprofits who are specifically attacking coronavirus-related issues head-on. In addition to social distancing and washing your hands, here are several ways to help the Atlanta community brave the crisis through donations or other means.AnimalsAngels Among Us: This Alpharetta-based nonprofit rescues dogs and cats in North Georgia and is asking for sanitizing and cleaning supplies.&nbsp;Atlanta Humane Society: The nonprofit pet rescue organization has expended its free pet food assistance program and is offering free virtual veterinary assistance.&nbsp;Furkids: With a cat shelter in Cumming and a dog shelter in Alpharetta, this nonprofit rescues homeless animals and tries to connect them with foster homes.&nbsp;LifeLine Animal Project: This nonprofit manages DeKalb and Fulton County Animal Services and provides low-cost veterinary care at its clinic and runs outreach programs to provide pets with free veterinary care, transportation and pet supplies.&nbsp;PAWS Atlanta: While this Decatur-based animal shelter had suspended cat and dog intakes and adoptions, it is still placing animals with foster families.&nbsp;Pet Buddies Food Pantry: This nonprofit aims to provide pet food, supplies, and spay and neuter services to families in need.&nbsp;Zoo Atlanta: Located in Grant Park, the zoo has shut down operations due to the crisis but has issued matching donation challenges to try to retain staff and care for its animals.&nbsp;Arts and entertainmentAtlanta Artist Lost Gig Fund: This C4 Atlanta program is designed to financially assist artists affected by canceled events and gigs in the Atlanta area.&nbsp;Atlanta Artist Relief Fund: This program aims to cook and deliver meals to Atlanta theater employees and performers who are out of work in the Atlanta area.&nbsp;Kimono My House: Atlanta musicians created this virtual house concert site to play shows using Facebook Live, where audiences are encouraged to donate to the artists.&nbsp;.FarmersThe Farmer Fund: This emergency relief fund was created by a coalition of Atlanta area nonprofits to raise money for local farmers in need.&nbsp;Financial assistance and fundingGreater Atlanta COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund: Created by the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and United Way of Greater Atlanta, this fund distributes money to local nonprofits during the pandemic.&nbsp;North Fulton Community Charities: This nonprofit is accepting financial donations to assist those in need with rent, mortgage, utility and other essential payments.&nbsp;North Georgia Community Foundation: This nonprofit created a relief fund, where donations are given to local nonprofits addressing the crisis.&nbsp;Homeless communitiesAtlanta Harm Reduction Coalition: This charity, which usually aims to reduce the effect of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, has set up programs to provide necessary goods and food to homeless populations.&nbsp;Atlanta Mission: With several homeless shelters around Atlanta, this charity provides housing for more than 600
