San Antonio’s urban forest is made up of 137.8 million trees, working overtime to reduce air pollution, storm runoff and regulate temperatures.Read MoreThe Urban Forest Inventory and Analysis survey evaluated the health, size and species of the trees to calculate the ecosystem services and values of the city’s trees.“Beyond beautification, trees are effective and efficient solutions to some of the challenges people and cities face,” Gretchen Riley, Texas A&amp;M Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program Leader said in a press release.The survey also found San Antonio’s urban forest removed more than 6,500 tons of air pollution, offsetting $63 million in health costs. The estimated reduced storm water runoff was over 380 million cubic feet and saved each resident about $13.89 in energy costs.Live oak trees seemed to be the biggest work horse of them all helping to store the bulk of carbon for the total of 3.5 million tons being stored by local trees, equivalent to greenhouse gasses emitted by 2.5 million cars driven for one year.The survey is conducted regularly, and the data is made public though the Texas A&amp;M Forest Service My City’s Trees web application where studies on other major partnering cities can also be found.“Communities will be able to utilize this information to make decisions about the future and to look back and see how those management decisions actually affected the urban forest and the people living and working in the community,” Riley said.To find out more about the study and its impact, visit .
