On April 1, in response to Biden’s American Jobs Plan, which allocates 80 billion in railway support, Amtrak announced intentions to expand their railway network — including trains running between San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Fort Worth. For those Texans thinking it may be too good to be true, you may be pleased to know Amtrak’s April 1 unveiling was not followed by coy “April Fools’” from the rail company’s CEO.Amtrak’s plan, which details a network of over 30 new routes in 15 new states and connecting 160 new communities, is budgeted with Biden’s new Though nothing is set in stone — Biden’s funding is still reliant on Congress to pass — a new system suddenly appears much more possible.According to the railway company, the expansion would not only decrease carbon emissions, prompted by more people previously reliant on cars taking more energy efficient public transit, but would create new jobs in more communities as well. That means potentially more jobs in San Antonio, and for Texans in connecting cities.“President Biden’s infrastructure plan is what this nation has been waiting for," said Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn in a statement.&nbsp;READ MORE:“Amtrak has a bold vision to bring energy-efficient, world-class intercity rail service to up to 160 new communities across the nation, as we also invest in our fleet and stations across the U.S,” Flynn continued.On Biden’s plan, local transit leaders are optimistic. “VIA is fully supportive of federal participation in ensuring equitable access to public transit for our community,” the San Antonio based transit company told MySA.&nbsp;“We look forward to seeing how this proposed legislation moves through the US House and Senate, and we are encouraged by the Biden Administration’s focus on increasing funding for transit.”While plans are subject to change, one can now dream of a quick day trip up to Austin by train, bypassing the dreaded inter-city traffic, a little less tentatively.Camille Sauers is a freelance writer based in San Antonio.
