And far from, as the piece later alleges, “resisting military engagement” Obama was thwarted by Congress and popular opinion from striking the Assad regime last year.The New York Times’ misreporting aside, there are real questions about what happens when the US starts bombing. If the arming the moderate rebels adventure was any indication, US actions in Syria are lacking in effectiveness. Obama may finally, but likely not a workable one. Keep bombing and hope for the best?There’s also the larger point of where ISIS’ support comes from. ISIS gained a foothold in Iraq because the central Shiite government had discriminated against them much as the Assad government had disenfranchised the majority Sunni population of Syria. Obama can say that this is not a war against Sunni Muslims all he likes, but the reality is he is bombing Sunnis in Iraq and soon in Syria. Sunnis caught up in sectarian battles are facing US firepower supporting the other side.
