Beginning Thursday, all people of color in Vermont, who are 16 years of age or older can sign up to be vaccinated against COVID-19. "I'm very happy and ecstatic that BIPOC people are being prioritized," says Steffen Gillom, president of the Windham County NAACP chapter. "We really do not feel that this rate of vaccination for that community is something we could ignore. This is a very data-driven approach," says Dr. Mark Levine, Vermont's commissioner of Public Health. Levine says roughly 20% of all people of color in Vermont, have received at least one vaccine dose, while non-Hispanic whites have received at least one dose at roughly 33%. He says the disparity still exists, despite efforts from the state to offer vaccines to people of color in multi-generational households, who met the age requirements. The state has also been working alongside community partners, to set up vaccination sites.Levine says people of color skew younger when it comes to infection rates, because of factors ranging from higher use of public transportation, more public-facing jobs, more chronic diseases and housing with multi-generations. Don Stevens, chief of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk-Abenaki Nation, received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine several months ago, through his participation in the University of Vermont's ongoing vaccine trial. Stevens says he decided to volunteer in order to encourage public trust in the vaccine. "By getting the vaccine myself, it would allow other people to make a decision on whether the vaccine was harmful or OK, at least in my case," Stevens said."I do know people personally, I’ve lost to COVID-19, so I’m more scared of COVID-19 myself, personally, than I am the vaccine, " says Mia Schultz, the president of the Rutland NAACP chapter.The state of Vermont is further expanding vaccine eligibility.
