XThe 1999 draft produced both major busts and studs. Lets revisit the draft in detail: 1. Browns: Tim Couch, QB Kentucky Couch played for 5 seasons in Cleveland behind a horrendous offensive line. He was sacked 56 times in his rookie season. He had a career QB rating of 75.1 while throwing 67 interceptions and 64 touchdowns. His career QB record was 22-37 in his 5 year career in Cleveland. He never started another game after. 2. Eagles: , QB Syracuse McNabb was greeted with Boo's on draft day by the fans, but he has proved them wrong. He has been to 6 pro bowls, 1 super bowl, and 5 NFC Championship games. He's thrown for just under 33,000 yards and 216 TDs to 100 INTs. His career is still going strong, but his days in Philly could be over. 3. Bengals: Akili Smith, QB Oregon Akili Smith had a 3 year career in Cincinnati, going 3-14 in 17 games. He threw only 5 career TDs to 13 INTs, and his career QB rating was 52.8. He is considered one of the biggest busts of all time. 4. Colts: Edgerrin James, RB Miami Edge turned out to be a stud in Indianapolis. He's the Colts franchise all time leading rusher and currently ranks 11th on the all time rushing yards list with 12,246 yards. He played some with Seattle this year, but his career is basically over. 5. Saints: Ricky Williams, RB Texas Ricky had a decent 3 year career in New Orleans before being traded to Miami in 2002. He exploded for 1,853 yards and 16 TDs in his first year with the Dolphins and after 2003 he retired. Now he's back in the again with the Dolphins and had a terrific year, rushing for 1,121 yards and 11 TDs. 6. Rams: Torry Holt, WR NC State Torry Holt has been a top 5 WR of the past decade. He's a 7 time pro bowler. He's caught 920 passes for 13,382 yards and 74 TDs in his 10 year career, making him a draft day stud. 7. Redskins: Champ Bailey, CB Georgia Champ Bailey was the first defensive player taken in the 1999 draft, and he has not dissapointed. He is considered perhaps the best CB of the last decade, playing for the Redskins and Broncos. He has 46 career INTs and is a future hall of famer. 8. Cardinals: David Boston, WR Ohio State Boston exploded in 2001 with 98 receptions and 1,598 yards. The Chargers signed him for a 7 year $53 million dollar contract, but the rest of his career was a major disappointment which included injuries and off the field issues. 9. Lions: Chris Claiborne, LB USC Claiborne had a decent 7 year career recording 400 solo tackles and 169 assisted. He played for the Lions, Vikings, and the Giants. Definitely not a top 10 pick when you look back, but many teams did worse. 10. Ravens: Chris McAllister, CB Arizona McAlister had a very good 10 year career in Baltimore, making 3 pro bowls and winning 1 super bowl. Recently his career has been decimated by injuries, as he's started only 16 games in the last 3 years (2 with NO). But he can be considered a good pick at the 10 spot by the Ravens. 11. Vikings: Daunte Culpepper, QB UCF Culpepper had one of the best seasons a QB has ever had in 2004 throwing for 39 touchdowns and 4,717 yards. His career was very successful in Minnesota, until left for Oakland. His last season in Minnesota was horrific and since he has bounced around. He can be considered somewhat of a success, because he did take the Vikings to the playoffs twice. 12. Bears: Cade McNown, QB UCLA McNown played only 3 seasons in Chicago, throwing 16 TDs and 19 INTs. He had a career record of 3-12 and QB rating of 67.6, making him the 3rd QB bust in the first 12 picks. 13. Steelers: Troy Edwards, WR Louisiana Tech Edwards caught 203 passes for 2,404 yards and 11 TDs in 7 NFL seasons. He had a successful rookie year in Pittsburgh, but he never became a good NFL WR. 14. Chiefs: John Tait, OT BYU Tait was the first offensive lineman taken in the 1999 NFL draft. He never made a pro bowl but he had a pretty decent 10 year career. He blocked for Priest Holmes and Thomas Jones during their prime, but he was nothing more than an average offensive lineman. 15. Buccaneers: Anthony McFarland, DT LSU McFarland had a successful NFL career winning 2 super bowls (1 with the Bucs and 1 with the Colts). He had 22.5 career sacks and clogged up the middle during run plays. An injury has cut his career short, but he was a good DT that never made a pro bowl. 16. Titans: Jevon Kearse, DE Florida Kearse made an imediate NFL impact winning defensive rookie of the year with the Titans. He never returned to his rookie form, but he had 74 career sacks and 3 pro bowl appearances in his 11 year career with Tennessee and Philly, making him a very successful DE in the NFL. 17. Patriots: Damien Woody, C Boston College Woody had a good 4 year career in NE making the pro bowl in 2002. He won 2 super bowls there and signed a big free agent contract with Detroit afterwords. He now plays for the Jets, and he can be considered a very solid pick by NE. 18. Raiders: Matt Stinchomb, OT Georgia Stinchomb played 4 season as a backup in Oakland. He signed with Tampa Bay in 2004 and started for 1 year. After, he had to have back surgery which ended his career. Stinchomb can be considered a bust in NFL. 19. Giants: Luke Petitgout, OG Notre Dame Petitgout started 106 games for the Giants, and was a pretty good Guard during that time. Although he never made a pro bowl, he was a solid OG. His career ended in TB after he suffered a torn ACL in 2007. 20. Cowboys: Ebeneezer Ekuban, DE UNC Ekuban was a decent pick by the Cowboys. He transformed into an average DE at the next level, never making the transition to one of the premier pass rushers. He recorded 36.5 sacks in his 9 year NFL career. 21. Cardinals: L.J. Shelton, OT Eastern Michigan Shelton started 125 games at OT for the Cards, Browns, and Dolphins. He's now a backup OT on the Chargers. Shelton is another offensive lineman from the 1999 draft that had/has had a solid NFL career, but never transitioned into a premier offensive lineman. 22. Seahakws: Lamar King, DE Saginaw Valley College King was one of the biggest busts from the 1999 NFL draft. He only recorded 12 sacks in his 5 year NFL career. He started just 37 games in 5 years due to injuries and poor play. 23. Bills: Antoine Winfield, CB Ohio State Although Winfield has only made 1 pro bowl, he is considered one of the top corners in the NFL. He's started 128 games in his 11 year career, recording around 800 tackles and intercepting 26 passes. He was a very good pick by the Bills at 23. 24. 49ers: Reggie McGrew, DT Florida McGrew never started an NFL game in his 3 year NFL career. He had 10 tackles and 1 sack, making him a huge bust. 25. Packers: Antuan Edwards, CB Clemson Edwards' career was decimated by injuries. He finished his 6 year career with 7 INTs, another bust. 26. Packers: Fernando Bryant, CB Alabama Make it 2 straight CB busts. He started 109 games in his 9 year NFL career and finished his career with 7 INTs. 27. Lions: Aaron Gibson, OT Wisconsin Gibson started 34 games in his 5 year career. Gibson didn't produce in the NFL and his career was hampered by injuries, another bust. 28. Patriots: Andy Katzenmoyer, LB Ohio State Katezenmoyer started just 14 career NFL games in his 2 year career with the Patriots. A bulging disk in his neck prevented him from having a successful NFL LB, and he retired after 2 seasons. 29. Vikings: Dimitrius Underwood, DT Michigan St. Underwood didn't start a game in his NFL career. He had 4 sacks in his 2 year NFL career. Underwood attempted suicide and is now in jail. 30. Falcons: Patrick Kerney, DE Virginia Kerney has had a successful 11 year career in Atlanta in Seattle, making 2 pro bowls. He has 82.5 career sacks and can be considered one of the better picks of the draft. 31. Broncos: Al Wilson, LB Tennessee Wilson recorded 560 tackles, 21.5 sacks, and made 5 pro bowls in his 8 year NFL career. He was one of the best MLBs in the NFL during his career, and is one of the top picks of this draft. When we look back at the 1999 NFL draft, we see some big busts. But we can't ignore some of the stars that were drafted. However, there were stars drafted in the later rounds as well. Let's take a look at my top 5's of each: Top 5 Best Picks of the 1st Round 1.
