They can be tuned to absorb different wavelengths of light as required – the wavelengths that plants don't need for photosynthesis, in this particular piece of research.While one lettuce control group was exposed to the full spectrum of white light, three other groups were grown under different light filters, simulating varying types of ST-OSC absorption and with the ratio of blue light to red light adjusted in each filter."Not only did we find no meaningful difference between the control group and the experimental groups, we also didn't find any significant difference between the different filters," , from North Carolina State University.That's promising for the future application of ST-OSCs: While greenhouses have many advantages, they can require more energy than other types of farming, not least to regulate the internal temperature.
