By () Nearly a dozen people in Clark County, including several children, have been sickened by acute non-viral hepatitis, and alkaline water might be to blame, the Southern Nevada Health District said Tuesday. The Health District said it first received reports of acute non-viral hepatitis, a potentially serious liver condition, in five children last November. All of the children required hospitalization, but have since recovered. The young patients came from four different households and the cause of their illness was unknown. Since then, six others — three adults and three children — have reported experiencing less severe symptoms that included vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, and fatigue. The only common link identified between all the cases has been consumption of “Real Water” brand alkaline water, the health district said. The Health District is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and its state partners to investigate the hepatitis reports and the FDA is conducting further investigation into the Real Water facility. By way of the health district, the FDA recommended that consumers, restaurants and retailers discontinue drinking, cooking with, selling or serving Real Water alkaline water. A Las Vegas-based company called Real Water, which bottles and sells alkalized water, did not immediately return a phone message Tuesday. It touted its product, which has a pH of 9.0, as a premium drinking water that “can help your body to restore balance and reach your full potential!” According to the Real Water website, “most of the drinking water is stripped of valuable electrons, making the water acidic and creating free radicals. Free radicals steal electrons from the body’s cells. This is called Free Radical Damage and it is the cause of many serious health conditions. They operate much like rust on a car, zapping people from their life force.” The Environmental Protection Agency recommends drinking water have a pH between 6.5-8.5. Neutral pH is 7. Acute non-viral hepatitis can have many causes, including exposure to toxins, autoimmune disease or drinking too much alcohol. Symptoms often include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, light-colored stools, joint pain, and yellow skin or eyes.
