The Southern Nevada Health District said Friday that people who were laid off or furloughed in the occupational groups currently eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, and are reentering the workforce or seeking reemployment, also qualify for the shots. This includes occupations in the health care, public safety and security, front-line community support, front-line supply chain and logistics, and food service and hospitality groups as defined by the state. Allowing people who lost vaccine-eligible jobs into the pool, along with those currently employed, could be a boon to locals in some of Las Vegas' largest and hardest-hit industries. Nevada’s unemployment rate hit a record 28.2% last April, the first full month of mandated coronavirus business shutdowns, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. That made Nevada’s jobless rate the worst in the country. Additionally, the number of jobs in the food and hospitality industry was down 41% compared to April 2019, DETR said. Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered casinos and other nonessential businesses statewide closed in mid-March to help curb the spread of the coronavirus, and though some businesses were allowed to start reopening on May 9 under strict social distancing guidelines, Nevada’s signature casinos remain closed until at least June. Some, like Palms and Main Street Station, remain shuttered, while other properties opened under reduced capacity or with fewer amenities. The health district’s largest vaccine clinics, located at Cashman Center and the Las Vegas Convention Center, are open Tuesday through Saturday.
