KENT: WISCONSIN REPUBLICAN GLENN GROTHMAN WAS ARGUING AGAINST WHAT HE CALLED A MARRIAGE PENALTY IN THE NEW COVID RELIEF BILL WHEN HIS COMMENTS TRIGGERED A BACKLASH. &gt;&gt; I BRING IT UP BECAUSE I KNOW THE STRENGTH THAT BLACK LIVES MATTER HAD IN THIS LAST ELECTION. I KNOW IT’S A GROUP THAT DOESN’T LIKE THE OLD-FASHIONED FAMILY. DISTURBED THAT WE HAVE ANOTHER PROGRAM HERE IN WHICH WE’RE INCREASING THE MARRIAGE PENALTY. KENT: THE COMMENTS DREW IMMEDIATE PUSHBACK ON THE HOUSE FLOOR. &gt;&gt; HOW DARE YOU THAT SAY WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN FAMILIES IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY. THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS. KENT: AND ALSO A STRONG RESPONSE FROM WISCONSIN DEMOCRATS. &gt;&gt; IT’S PROFOUNDLY DISAPPOINTING TO HEAR GLENN GROTHMAN RACE BAIT AND FAN THE FLAMES OF BIGOTRY IN -- FLAMES OF FEAR AND BIGOTRY IN ORDER TO DISTRACT FROM A BILL THAT’S GOING TO BENEFIT FAMILIES OF EVERY RACE. KENT: STATE REPUBLICAN PARTY OFFICIALS DECLINED TO COMMENT WHEN CONTACTED BY 12 NEWS. BUT A SPOKESMAN FOR THE CONGRESSMAN DID RESPOND, SAYING GROTHMAN’S COMMENTS WERE NOT IN REFERENCE TO THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT, BUT RATHER, THE BLACK LIVES MATTER ORGANIZATION. GROTHMAN’S OFFICE SENT AN IMAGE THEY SAY WAS REMOVED FROM THE GROUP’S WEBSITE WITH A STATED A GOAL TO DISRUPT THE WESTERN-PRESCRIBED NUCLEAR FAMILY. MEANWHILE, DEMOCRATIC STATE REP DAVID BOWEN, WHO HAS TAKEN PART IN A NUMBER OF BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTEST MARCHES IN THE PAST YEAR, CALLED GROTHMAN’S COMMENTS OFFENSIVE. Glenn Grothman was arguing against what he called a marriage penalty in the new COVID-19 relief bill, when his comments triggered a backlash."I bring it up because I know the strength that Black Lives Matter had in this last election. I know it's a group that doesn't like the old-fashioned family. (I'm) disturbed that we have another program here in which we're increasing the marriage penalty," Grothman said.His comments drew immediate pushback on the House floor."How dare you say we are not interested in families in the Black community. That is outrageous. That should be stricken down," Del. Stacey Plaskett (D) Virgin Islands said. Wisconsin Democrats also responded strongly. "It's profoundly disappointing to hear Glenn Grothman race bait and fan the flames of bigotry in order to distract from a bill that's going to benefit families of every race," Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler said. State Republican Party officials declined to comment when contacted by WISN 12.But a spokesman for the Congressman did respond, saying Grothman's comments were not in reference to the Black Lives Matter movement, but rather, the Black Lives Matter organization, whose website he says previously stated a goal to disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family.Meanwhile, Democratic state Rep David Bowen, who has taken part in a number of Black Lives Matter protest marches in the past year, called Grothman's comments offensive."It's disappointing to see, time and time again, some of our highest-ranking elected officials in the state of Wisconsin on the Republican side, continue to make comments that are clearly driven by racism," Bowen said."So, what would your message to Congressman Grothman be?" WISN 12's Kent Wainscott asked Bowen."I would like the congressman to apologize because he is disparaging the Black families that we have in the state of Wisconsin," Bowen said.Wisconsin Republican U.S. Rep.
