Detroit Free Press A program that provided an additional 20 weeks of unemployment benefits in Michigan has ended, Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency Monday.The Extended Benefits (EB) program, which is mostly federally funded, &nbsp; in October &nbsp;when the state was in a period of high unemployment. EB is triggered&nbsp;when&nbsp;a state's jobless rate averages more than 8% for three consecutive months.But the agency said that Michigan's jobless rate is now below the threshold for EB to remain active.There were 96,000 claimants on the EB program in Michigan as of Feb. 13, the most recent data available from the U.S. Department of Labor.For claimants&nbsp;who have already been paid their maximum weeks of EB, their EB claim is considered exhausted and there are no more weeks of benefits under that program available, the agency said.Claimants may be eligible for benefits from&nbsp;another program, and the agency will notify them when they may apply for benefits on a different program.Those receiving&nbsp;Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits — those who are self-employed or are&nbsp; independent contractors who would usually not qualify for state benefits — will see the maximum of weeks available reduced from 57 to 50, the agency said, also due to the state no longer being in a period of high unemployment.It's unclear whether&nbsp;the program phases out over time or immediately ends for those on the EB program who&nbsp;have not exhausted their 20 weeks. Extensions of those two federal programs were implemented in January after being signed into law in late December.
