SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The Shreveport City Council pushed forward a proposed ordinance to reduce the penalty for the possession of marijuana.The ordinance is sponsored by Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor and Councilman John Nickelson.“I don’t believe people should be threatened with arrest or incarceration for possessing small quantities of marijuana,” Nickelson said.If passed, people 18 or older in possession of 14 grams or less of marijuana will be fined $50 or tasked with community service.During the meeting, many people seemed to support the proposal, including police chief Ben Raymond.“You don’t have to deal with the routine booking procedures,” he explained. “It’s easier for the officer; it’s easier for the individual being accused of a crime. It just makes the process much quicker so we can get on to other pertinent matters.”Baton Rouge and New Orleans have already passed similar ordinances.However, Taylor made one thing very clear:“This does not give you the right to go out here and just say, ‘I’m going to have marijuana.’ That’s not what this says.”The council has two weeks from Tuesday, March 9, to make a decision.Copyright 2021 KSLA.
