The Executive Council on Wednesday confirmed Gov. Chris Sununu’s nomination of McKenzie Snow of Washington, D.C. as director of the Division of Learner Support. The vote was 4-1 with the lone Democrat, Cinde Warmington, opposed. Snow, 30 and a Fulbright scholar, worked as a policy adviser to DeVos for nearly two years and then became the department’s K-12 policy director. She will now work with a DeVos supporter, Commissioner of Education Frank Edelblut, in directing state support for technical education and special education, the implementation of federal programs and overseeing assistance focused on student wellness and adult education. Like her former and new bosses, Snow is an advocate of school choice. Prior to joining the Trump White House, she was policy director at the Foundation for Excellence in Education, an education reform think tank founded by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Earlier, she held policy and research positions at the conservative Charles Koch Institute. Most recently, she was a special assistant to Trump’s Domestic Policy Council. At Wednesday’s meeting, Snow was praised by Republican Councilor Joe Kenney, who said she is “exactly what New Hampshire needs.” He said she has an “absolutely glowing resume” and called her focus on workforce-directed learning “inspiring.” “When I look at the talent and energy and the fact that she is coming from the outside into New Hampshire, I think she’s going to provide a lot of great energy, a lot of insight … She’s going to be a mover and shaker,” Kenney said. Warmington said she was deeply concerned about Snow’s ties to DeVos and her support for school choice. “I’m very concerned about the diversion of public funds going from public education and the negative impact on public schools and our taxpayers,” Warmington said. She moved to table the confirmation vote but could not get a second for her motion.
